About the Role
The Company is seeking a Chief Government Affairs Officer (CGAO) to serve as a senior executive leader responsible for the development and advancement of the organization's federal, state, and local advocacy, public policy, and movement-building strategy. The CGAO will be tasked with shaping a clear national arts policy agenda, providing strategic leadership for the advocacy platform, and building high-level relationships with Members of Congress, federal agencies, and national advocacy partners. This role requires a politically savvy, creative, and action-oriented individual with a strong background in government affairs, including experience in grassroots organizing, coalition-building, and movement-based influence. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of bipartisan relationship-building, innovative leadership, and a deep commitment to the role of the arts in strengthening communities and democracy. Key responsibilities for the CGAO include leading the development of a cohesive government affairs strategy, modernizing advocacy approaches, and overseeing all activities related to nonpartisan policy development, public education, and grassroots engagement. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and grow a talented government affairs team, maintain a visible leadership presence, and ensure that advocacy initiatives are effective and aligned with the needs of the national arts community. Collaboration with research, communications, and program teams is essential to translate data and narratives into compelling advocacy. The CGAO will also be responsible for managing advocacy-related budgets, resources, and external consultants, and for partnering with state and local arts organizations to support the development of model legislation and policy frameworks. A Bachelor's degree is required, with a preference for a Master's or other relevant advanced degree, and a strong alignment with the mission and values of the organization.
