Controller (Non-Profit)
Job Description
About the organization
Our client is a well-established national nonprofit organization with a $60M+ operating budget, supporting multiple program areas and complex funding streams across the United States. The organization has a strong mission-driven culture and is committed to investing in its finance leadership. Additional details about the organization are shared with qualified candidates.
About the role
This is a senior operational finance leadership role reporting directly to the VP of Finance and Accounting. The Controller will oversee the full accounting cycle for a complex, multi-program nonprofit, lead a team of three accounting professionals, and serve as a strategic thought partner to budget owners and organizational leadership across the organization.
The right person for this role is a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who is equally comfortable in the operational details and in strategic conversations with senior leadership. This is a fully remote position open to candidates anywhere in the United States.
What you will be doing
- Overseeing the full accounting cycle including daily operations, monthly reconciliations, and financial deliverables that support both program and administrative functions
- Preparing programmatic and organization-wide financial reporting, performance metrics, and net asset position analysis
- Leading budget compilation, reporting, and performance management — serving as an ongoing thought partner to budget owners and supporting reforecasts as organizational needs evolve
- Managing the annual audit and Form 990 process end to end, including audit relationships, planning, preparation of supporting schedules, and compilation of financial statements
- Evaluating and improving financial systems, workflows, and reporting infrastructure to strengthen internal controls and support better organizational decision-making
- Establishing and maintaining internal policies, procedures, and controls to ensure nonprofit GAAP compliance and operational best practices
- Managing and developing a team of three accounting professionals — providing mentorship, clear processes, and a culture of financial discipline and continuous improvement
What we are looking for
- 7 or more years of finance experience in service of nonprofit organizations, either as an internal employee or as an auditor or outsourced accounting professional
- Demonstrated success managing or overseeing nonprofit finance operations, including budgets in excess of $50M across multiple departments and program areas
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required — Master's in Accounting and CPA strongly preferred
- Experience with NetSuite or similar accounting systems that support matrixed transaction fields
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate existing processes and design custom workflows and system solutions
- Ability to manage multiple deliverables across varied stakeholders and communicate complex financial concepts clearly to non-finance audiences
Compensation and benefits
Base salary of $140,000 to $160,000. Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plan, life and disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, generous paid time off, and parental leave. Strong professional development and mentorship opportunities.
