Position Overview

Mackenzie Stuart is partnered with a highly recognized, physician led, multi site ophthalmology group seeking a Director of Clinical Operations to oversee day to day clinical performance, workflow optimization, and operational excellence across all locations. This leader will ensure each clinic delivers high quality, patient centered care while supporting physician productivity, maintaining regulatory compliance, and enabling scalable, efficient operations as the practice continues to grow.


This position works closely with the C-suite, physician leadership, clinical managers, technicians, surgical teams, and administrative staff to drive best in class processes, uphold clinical standards, and support strategic initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Operations Leadership

  • Oversee daily clinical operations across all ophthalmology and optometry locations to ensure efficient patient flow, high quality care, and optimal provider productivity.
  • Standardize workflows, protocols, and clinical practices across clinics while maintaining physician autonomy and supporting subspecialty needs.
  • Manage clinic staffing levels, including technicians, scribes, and ancillary clinical staff; oversee scheduling, productivity targets, and performance expectations.
  • Partner with surgical and ASC teams to ensure seamless pre op, post op, and premium lens processes.


Quality, Compliance & Patient Safety

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies (CMS, OSHA, HIPAA, state medical board) across all sites.
  • Implement and track quality metrics (e.g., wait times, throughput, staff utilization, surgical conversion rates).
  • Collaborate with physicians to uphold clinical standards, develop new protocols, and drive quality improvement initiatives.


People Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and support clinical managers and supervisors across multiple locations.
  • Develop training programs for technicians, scribes, and new clinical hires, including competencies and career ladder pathways.
  • Build a positive, patient focused culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.


Operational Optimization

  • Analyze KPIs to identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and opportunities for operational enhancements.
  • Oversee adoption and optimization of EMR/EHR workflows, imaging systems, diagnostic equipment, and clinical technologies.
  • Support practice expansion efforts (new locations, added providers, added subspecialties) through operational planning and clinic readiness execution.


Financial & Strategic Support

  • Partner with finance and physician leadership to support budgeting, forecasting, staffing models, and cost control measures.
  • Support strategic initiatives such as service line expansion (e.g., retina, optometry, premium IOLs, refractive surgery).
  • Participate in vendor negotiations related to clinical equipment, supplies, and inventory levels.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Nursing, or related field.
  • 5-7+ years of multi site clinical operations leadership in healthcare.
  • Strong understanding of patient flow, clinical workflow, and practice operations.
  • Experience leading and developing clinical teams in a high volume environment.


Preferred:

  • Experience in ophthalmology or optometry clinical operations strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a physician led or private practice environment.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic diagnostics, EMRs (e.g., NextGen, ModMed, Compulink), and ASC operations.
  • COA or COT
