A mission-driven organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and financial reporting operations, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance across all financial activities. This role is a key member of the finance team, overseeing a small team responsible for accounting, reporting, grants management, and compliance.
The Controller will partner cross-functionally to support revenue tracking, grant compliance, and financial reporting that drives informed decision-making and organizational growth.

Job Details
A mission-driven organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and financial reporting operations, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance across all financial activities. This role is a key member of the finance team, overseeing a small team responsible for accounting, reporting, grants management, and compliance.
The Controller will partner cross-functionally to support revenue tracking, grant compliance, and financial reporting that drives informed decision-making and organizational growth.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Oversight
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance and accounting professionals, including direct oversight of management-level staff
- Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture across departments
- Coordinate workflows and priorities to support organization-wide financial needs
- Provide financial insights and reporting to leadership and committees
- Act as a strategic partner to executive leadership on financial operations and process improvements
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee daily accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, allocations, and close processes
- Ensure accurate revenue recognition, including contributions, grants, and restricted funding
- Produce timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting systems
- Manage accounting for multiple funding sources, including restricted and unrestricted funds
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support annual budgeting and partner with department leaders on financial planning
- Monitor budgets and provide variance analysis and insights
- Assist with long-term forecasting and financial modeling
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
- Serve as primary contact for external audits and manage audit preparation
- Ensure compliance with regulatory filings and reporting requirements
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies
- Oversee grant compliance, tracking, and reporting
Systems & Process Improvement
- Manage financial systems and identify opportunities for process enhancements
- Support alignment between financial systems and other internal platforms
- Assist with financial reporting for leadership and board-level committees
Cash & Investment Management
- Oversee cash flow, banking relationships, and investment reporting
- Maintain reporting for investment portfolios and various funding accounts
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 8–12 years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit or multi-entity environments
- 5+ years of leadership experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles
- Advanced Excel and accounting systems proficiency
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification
- Experience with fund accounting and CRM systems
- Background working with grants, endowments, or complex funding structures
- Experience in mission-driven or nonprofit organizations
