About the Opportunity – Commercial Construction Accountant
A national commercial construction organization is seeking a detail-oriented Commercial Construction Accountant to support core accounting and administrative operations. This role is ideal for an experienced project accountant who enjoys ownership of their work, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is comfortable wearing multiple hats. You’ll play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting and smooth day-to-day operations across the business.

Key Responsibilities – Commercial Construction Accountant

  • Prepare and post journal entries including payroll, accruals, and recurring expenses
  • Support month-end close activities, reconciliations, and WIP over/under revenue adjustments
  • Create AR invoices, review Schedules of Values (SOVs), and collaborate with Project Managers on monthly billings
  • Maintain budgets, contracts, and project WIP schedules
  • Prepare and distribute weekly AP reports to Project Managers
  • Code and review corporate credit card transactions
  • Assist with AR collections and client follow-ups
  • File monthly sales tax returns and support annual 1099 preparation
  • Record and reconcile recurring insurance expenses and intercompany transactions
  • Prepare payroll inputs (timecards, reimbursements, mileage, per diem) and post payroll journal entries in Sage
  • Actively manage a shared accounting/admin inbox and triage requests by urgency
  • Complete credit applications and compliance documentation
  • Maintain user access across accounting and office systems
  • Assist with insurance renewals, workers’ comp filings, audits, pre-liens, and compliance tracking
  • Maintain state filings, annual reports, and business licenses

Qualifications – Commercial Construction Accountant

  • 3–5+ years of recent, hands-on accounting experience in construction (beyond AP or general office administration)
  • Strong understanding of journal entries, debits/credits, and month-end close processes
  • Proficient in Excel, including formulas
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Comfortable supporting both accounting and administrative functions
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
  • Construction or project-based accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with WIP, sales tax filings, payroll accounting, insurance audits, and 1099s a plus
