Position Title: TEMPORARY GRANT POSITION - Instructional Coach, Special Education Academics (for Schools with a School Improvement Designation)

Reports To: Chief Academic Officer

FLSA Status: Exempt

QUALIFICATION:
  • Bachelor's Degree in special education with elementary school experience
  • Minimum five years of classroom experience
  • Valid South Carolina teaching certification
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid SC Teaching License (any applicable area)

Must have current government issued identification

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

8 Hours/190 days + 5 supplemental days

Certified Salary Scale, temporary grant position for the 2026-2027 school year

Position is contingent on annual funding

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment may be adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the district Coordinator of Special Education- Academics, assists elementary special education and general education teachers in developing increased content knowledge and pedagogical strategies through ongoing and sustained professional learning experiences at the Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) and Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) elementary schools in Lexington County School District One. Provides ongoing support in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to build capacity within ATSI and TSI school special education programs. Fosters collegial relationships and engaging learning environments in order to work productively as both a facilitator and coach. Assists teachers in the use of effective instructional and assessment strategies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One towards increased outcomes for students.
  • Interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders effectively.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
  • Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information.
  • Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities and essential functions; provides for safe storage and proper use of all tools, equipment and materials.
  • Works with teachers to plan, implement, and reflect upon instruction.
  • Observes classes and engages teachers in reflection conferences.
  • Identifies standards-based materials and other curriculum resources and can explain how those materials work in special education settings.
  • Encourages and facilitates conversations among teachers about content and instructional practices.
  • Facilitates ongoing collaboration among teachers to support common expectations and assessments.
  • Employs effective coaching strategies based on evidence-based practices.
  • Meets regularly with other district coaches, specialists, and administrators to plan ongoing professional learning opportunities for teachers.
  • Coordinates special education supports specific to academics, curriculum, and instruction, and services related to access to curriculum and instruction.
  • Monitors the school's academic achievement and growth as it relates to students with disabilities, including formative and summative data.
  • Assists in facilitating Data-Based Individualization (DBI) at the school level with special education and regular education teachers for students with Individualized Education Plans.
  • Provides training, support, and professional learning to school leaders, teachers, and non-certified personnel related to IDEA and students with disabilities.
  • Observes lessons and provides teachers and administrators with specific, timely, and focused feedback regarding content, instruction, and/or assessment, as requested.
  • Teaches demonstration lessons to facilitate implementation and continuous improvement of effective instructional practices in classrooms.
  • Assists teachers and interventionists in planning for the instruction and assessment of students not meeting expectations for learning and coaches them through the data-based individualization process.
  • Coordinates and participates in the evaluation of program effectiveness through data collection and data analysis.
  • Provides professional learning opportunities for teachers both during and after school as needed.
  • Provides content workshops on the implementation of high-leverage, evidence-based instructional practices for individual and/or groups of teachers.
  • Assists teachers in planning for differentiation of instruction and/or assessment of students based on analysis of both observational and written data.
  • Provides ongoing support for the effective implementation of standards-based, skill-driven IEP goals and accompanying specially designed mathematics instruction.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


RESPONSIBILITY:

Responsible for materials and supplies budget (if applicable). Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions. Supervises students in all instructional settings.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Lexington County School District One Board policies. Must be able to access reliable transportation.

Personal computer experience required. Strong knowledge of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to apply knowledge and current research and theory. Ability to organize and implement a flexible work schedule in order to meet reporting deadlines. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to submit all requested reports and documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with scheduled deadlines. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee. Computer literacy required.

The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as boxes of materials. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, listen and/or reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Duties are performed in classroom and office settings with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Physical demands are limited to work that requires occasional lifting/moving of items weighing up to twenty-five pounds. District travel is required; no overnight travel is required.

Performance of this job is evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
