JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Substitute Safety Monitor
REPORTS TO: Building Administrator
LOCATION: Benton Harbor Area Schools
JOB SUMMARY:
The Substitute Safety Monitor supports the building administration in maintaining a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for all students, employees, and visitors. This position assists with enforcing policies and procedures for safe and orderly schools on an as-needed basis. Substitute Safety Monitors are called to work when regular staff members are unavailable or when additional coverage is required.
DRESS CODE:
As individuals in this position are modeling appropriate behavior for our students, adherence to the dress code is required. In this position, employees are expected to wear black khaki slacks, a district-issued polo shirt (two shirts will be issued), and closed-toe shoes. Additional polo shirts may be purchased directly from Human Resources. Employees not adhering to the required dress code will not be allowed to work their scheduled shift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Evaluation:
The performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Administrator and feedback will be provided to the Director of Safety and EduStaff on an annual basis, or as needed, using the established EduStaff reporting form.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma with experience or training in a security-related field or, and equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Positive attitude toward, and interest in, working with youth
- Ability to communicate effectively and possess the ability to adhere to School Board Policy and Procedures in addition to Student Rights and Responsibilities.
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, counseling, or related human services field
- Knowledge of and the ability to apply standard security procedures and best practices.
- Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban-rural, multi-racial, and multi-ethnic school district.
- English/Spanish Bilingual
- Ensure students are following behavior expectations outlined by the Student Code of Conduct and PBIS lessons in all common areas
- Make continuous and consistent surveillance of assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, report and attempt to stop violations of the law and/or school board policies
- Guarantee smooth traffic flow and direct student movement between class periods and at other transition times
- Perform building walkthroughs to observe proper behavior and provide praise according to school guidelines & expectations.
- Greet visitors and assist them with directions and needed explanations
- Security Checks constantly
- Prevent unauthorized visitors not on official school business from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds(i.e. Safety and security)
- Substitute/on-call position through EduStaff
- Compensation based on district-approved hourly rate
- Work schedule varies depending on district needs
