What You'll Do
We are seeking a litigation attorney to join our Managing Attorney's Office (MAO) as a Litigation Services Attorney focused on California practice. This role is designed for an attorney interested in developing deep expertise in litigation procedure, discovery strategy, and court practice in California state and federal courts.
The Litigation Services Attorney will work closely with the firm's litigation teams and senior members of the Managing Attorney's Office to support procedural strategy, discovery planning, motion practice logistics, and case management across complex matters. The role provides a unique opportunity to gain broad exposure to sophisticated litigation while developing specialized expertise in California civil procedure and court practice.
This position is ideal for an attorney who enjoys the strategic and procedural aspects of litigation and wants to play a central role supporting multiple litigation teams across the firm.
Litigation Procedure & Case Support
• Assist litigation teams with procedural issues arising in California state and federal courts.
• Support the development of case management strategies and procedural timelines.
• Conduct research regarding California procedural rules, local court rules, and litigation requirements.
Discovery Support
• Assist with discovery planning and procedural guidance under the California Code of Civil Procedure, including written discovery, depositions, and discovery motion practice.
• Support case teams in managing discovery deadlines and procedural compliance.
• Assist with issues related to electronic discovery under the California Electronic Discovery Act.
Motion Practice Support
• Assist with procedural aspects of motion practice, including demurrers, motions to strike, discovery motions, and summary judgment motions.
• Support litigation teams in ensuring compliance with the California Rules of Court and applicable local court rules.
Court Filings & Case Management
• Assist with preparation and review of court filings and case management submissions.
• Help track and coordinate litigation deadlines across California courts.
• Work closely with litigation support and docketing teams to ensure compliance with court procedures.
Arbitration Support
• Assist case teams with procedural issues in arbitration matters, including proceedings before JAMS and the American Arbitration Association.
• Support procedural planning for arbitration discovery and hearings.
Internal Litigation Resource
• Assist in developing internal guidance materials relating to California litigation procedures.
• Help respond to procedural questions from litigation teams regarding California court practice.
What You'll Bring
• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the State Bar of California, or eligibility for admission.
• 1-4 years of litigation experience in California state or federal courts.
• Strong interest in litigation procedure and case strategy.
• Familiarity with the California Code of Civil Procedure and California court practice.
• Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Experience:
• Experience working on complex litigation matters.
• Exposure to discovery practice and motion practice in California courts.
• Interest in developing expertise in procedural strategy and litigation management.
Role Structure:
This position follows a non-partner-track attorney career path focused on litigation procedure, court practice, and litigation operations.
Attorneys in this role work closely with partners and litigation teams across the firm and gain exposure to a wide range of complex matters while developing deep expertise in litigation procedure and court operations.
Compensation
The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position in each of the below locations. This range may differ based on your geographic location and cost of living considerations. At Kirkland & Ellis, we consider compensation more than just a base salary. Compensation Range:
Los Angeles: $150,000 - $200,000
Bay Area: $150,000 - $200,000
