About the Role

This position serves as the senior operational leader for the finance department of a prominent nonprofit organization. The Director of Financial Operations is responsible for providing the structure and oversight necessary to turn complex financial data into actionable guidance for leadership. It is a high-impact role that bridges the gap between day-to-day accounting and long-term organizational strategy.

The team is looking for a grounded professional who can manage the technical side of nonprofit finance while building collaborative relationships across diverse departments. If you enjoy translating financial trends into clear insights for non-financial leaders and want to sustain the mission of a well-established institution, this is a great fit.

Essential Duties
  • Oversee all day-to-day financial operations, including cash flow monitoring, treasury functions, and liquidity planning.

  • Lead the monthly and annual close processes, ensuring all reconciliations and financial results are accurate and timely.

  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure strict compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Prepare comprehensive monthly financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses for internal stakeholders.

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, coordinating inputs across various departments to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.

  • Develop and maintain rolling forecasts, scenario analyses, and financial dashboards to support ongoing decision-making.

  • Act as the primary finance partner to department leaders, providing program costing, modeling, and a financial perspective on operational decisions.

  • Coordinate the annual audit process and the preparation of tax filings in partnership with external auditors and the CFO.

  • Lead initiatives to modernize financial systems, tools, and reporting capabilities to improve operational efficiency.

  • Prepare financial materials and analysis for committee and board-level presentations.

  • Partner with HR and IT on financial aspects of operations to ensure alignment across systems and processes.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting or financial planning and analysis.

  • Proven experience managing financial operations in an environment with multiple revenue streams.

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and a history of overseeing successful audits and budgeting processes.

  • Advanced proficiency in financial systems and Microsoft Excel.

  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to translate financial concepts for stakeholders outside of the finance team.

  • A proactive, grounded work ethic and the ability to build collaborative, solutions-oriented relationships.
