Quality Control Specialist - Mechanical Systems

Performs advanced (senior-level) engineering work responsible for reviewing mechanical designs to ensure accuracy, coordination, and compliance with standards across the state of Texas. This role ensures project drawings deliver reliable, efficient, and maintainable systems while maintaining consistency across all state facilities. The position provides oversight and quality assurance for mechanical systems to confirm that projects meet performance, safety, and code requirements. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential duties/responsibilities include:

  • Review mechanical drawings and specifications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with state and national codes.
  • Ensure uniformity of mechanical design standards, guidelines, and templates across all state projects.
  • Review design submittals to verify compliance with project requirements, safety codes, and performance expectations.
  • Evaluate designs to ensure mechanical systems are coordinated and free of conflicts.
  • Identify missing information, inconsistencies, or deficiencies within mechanical systems and recommend corrections.
  • Provide technical feedback to engineers, architects, and consultants on mechanical design quality.
  • Document and track deficiencies, ensuring timely resolution by project teams.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, and other disciplines to ensure mechanical integration with overall project design.
  • Verify that mechanical systems are designed for long-term efficiency, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Conduct quality audits of mechanical design deliverables to monitor adherence to established standards.
  • Develop recommendations for improving mechanical design quality and project documentation.
  • Prepare written reports summarizing design review findings and quality control outcomes.
  • Support the development of statewide best practices for mechanical system design and review.
  • Provide training, guidance, and clarification on mechanical quality control standards to internal staff and external partners.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education – Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Mechanical Engineering is required.

Experience – Minimum of five (5) years' professional experience in mechanical engineering, and mechanical plan design and review.

Licensure and/or Certification – If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence. Must possess or be able to attain a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas within 6 months from the date of employment.

Additional requirements include:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.
  • Proficiency in engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, or similar) is required.

  • Ability to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.
  • Availability for after-hours emergencies, overnight and weekend work is required. This position may have the ability to telecommute based on the needs of the division/agency. Travel in city and statewide is required.
