Engineer - 3rd Class

Amentum is seeking a licensed and skilled Engineer - 3rd Class to support facility operations and mechanical system maintenance in the Washington, DC area. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of complex building systems, including boilers, HVAC equipment, mechanical systems, and electrical components. The Engineer - 3rd Class must possess strong troubleshooting skills, extensive knowledge of safety regulations, and the ability to work independently while supporting and guiding junior engineering staff. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise and is considered a senior-level stationary engineering position within the facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, HVAC units, electrical systems, pumps, and other critical mechanical infrastructure.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide range of mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Diagnose operational issues and conduct troubleshooting to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Ensure compliance with mechanical and electrical safety codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Complete equipment inspections, log readings, and maintain accurate maintenance documentation.
  • Support energy efficiency initiatives and system optimization efforts.
  • Provide support and direction to junior engineers and maintenance personnel.
  • Respond to equipment failures, emergency conditions, and building alarms with professionalism and technical expertise.
  • Collaborate with facility managers, contractors, and engineering teams on repairs and upgrades.

Required Qualifications

  • Secret Clearance (required).
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • 3rd Class Steam and Hot Water Heating Boiler Engineer License (required).
  • 1-5 years of experience in engineering services, facility maintenance, or mechanical systems operations.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, including boilers, HVAC, electrical systems, and controls.
  • Ability to read schematics, technical manuals, and engineering documentation.
  • Knowledge of safety best practices and mechanical system codes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in federal, Department of State (DOS), or high-security environments.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS).
  • Experience operating systems in large commercial, industrial, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Additional mechanical certifications or engineering training.

Compensation Details: $97,000-$102,000 The compensation range or hourly rate listed for this position is provided as a good-faith estimate of what the company intends to offer for this role at the time this posting was issued. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
