Mechanical Engineer (Mechanical Design Engineer)
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer performs engineering work of intermediate complexity in support of a nuclear EPC project. Working under the supervision of the Discipline Lead or Area Lead Engineer, this role specifies mechanical equipment, prepares datasheets, supports P&ID development, and coordinates with procurement and construction through project startup.
Project Overview
This position supports a major nuclear EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project at a uranium enrichment facility in the United States. The work is performed under federal regulatory oversight and a nuclear quality assurance program. Candidates will join a multi-discipline engineering team executing one of the largest domestic nuclear fuel-cycle expansion projects in decades.
Work Location
In-office. Locations vary by assignment (Greenville, SC or Houston, TX).
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and make independent recommendations regarding technical solutions to problems of intermediate complexity in accordance with project requirements.
- Develop and review mechanical specifications and design criteria.
- Prepare and review calculations and specifications for equipment in support of P&ID development.
- Demonstrate design experience in mechanical systems and equipment design and specification.
- Establish equipment requirements and prepare equipment datasheets for mechanical equipment including unfired and fired heat transfer equipment, packaged equipment, pressure vessels, pumps and compressors.
- Evaluate dimensions, equipment connections, and equipment performance including pressure profiles, heat transfer rates, and off-design cases.
- Provide equipment sizing and application support to project development or process.
- Participate in material selection for equipment.
- Develop and revise equipment lists, narrative specifications, equipment standards, and equipment general arrangement and outline drawings.
- Participate in supplier/contractor bid clarification, negotiation, and award meetings.
- Represent Mechanical in 3D model reviews and monitor equipment modeling activities.
- Provide consultation during fabrication, witness testing, installation, commissioning, and startup of equipment.
- Execute work in compliance with the Project Quality Plan, approved scope, cost, and schedule baselines.
Basic Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum five (5) years of work-related experience.
- U.S. Citizenship is required (no exceptions).
- Working knowledge of applicable federal codes and standards, including U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and applicable state and local codes.
- Ability to communicate effectively with project management, peers, clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Ability to work in a time-conscious, deadline-driven environment with attention to detail.
- Intermediate computer skills including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and electronic presentations.
- Experience providing Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services on commercial or industrial projects.
- Proficiency executing EPC projects utilizing engineering analysis, 3D modeling, and 2D CADD automation tools in a multi-discipline environment.
- Intermediate knowledge of mechanical discipline codes and standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Proficiency with 2D CADD applications such as Bentley MicroStation and AutoCAD.
- Intermediate knowledge of equipment specification development.
- Intermediate knowledge of I&C requirements for packaged equipment.
- Intermediate knowledge of mechanical equipment design across project lifecycle phases (conceptual through commissioning).
- Intermediate knowledge of one or more specialties: rotating equipment, pressure vessels, unfired and fired heat transfer equipment, packaged equipment, or metallurgy and welding.
- Prior EPC experience supporting U.S. Department of Energy or other federal government agency projects.
- Experience with design of systems, structures, and components for nuclear facilities under ASME NQA-1.
- Experience in regulated industries (nuclear, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, manufacturing).
- Practical field experience supporting construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
