Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Engineer
Salary: $85,000 (negotiable based on experience)
Schedule: 9/80 Work Schedule
- Week 1: Monday–Thursday (9-hour days), Friday (8 hours)
- Week 2: Monday–Thursday (9-hour days), Friday Off
- Employment Type: Direct Hire
Position Overview
We are seeking a proactive Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Engineer to lead safety, compliance, and environmental initiatives within a manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for identifying workplace risks, implementing mitigation strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving a culture of safety and continuous improvement across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Risk Management
- Conduct facility-wide risk assessments across processes, equipment, chemicals, and work environments
- Develop and implement mitigation strategies using the hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative controls, PPE)
- Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHA/JSA) for critical operations
- Evaluate safety impact of new equipment, layouts, and process changes
- Analyze incident trends, near misses, and injuries to prevent recurrence
- Lead corrective and preventive action (CAPA) initiatives
Incident Response & Compliance
- Serve as the primary point of contact for safety incidents, investigations, and reporting
- Lead root cause analysis using methodologies such as 5 Whys and Fishbone
- Support regulatory audits and inspections (OSHA/MOSH, ATF, DCMA, and customer audits)
- Maintain accurate safety and environmental records and reporting systems
Environmental & Hazardous Materials Management
- Oversee hazardous waste handling, vendor coordination, and waste profiling
- Maintain chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Coordinate industrial hygiene assessments and exposure monitoring
- Ensure proper labeling, storage, and environmental compliance across the facility
Training & Leadership
- Lead Safety Committee meetings and track action items
- Develop and coordinate safety training programs (HazCom, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Fire Safety, CPR/First Aid, etc.)
- Track training completion and maintain compliance records
- Coach leaders and employees on safe work practices and accountability
- Promote a proactive, safety-first culture
Facility & Emergency Preparedness
- Conduct routine safety inspections of building and production areas
- Support emergency preparedness efforts, including fire drills and evacuation procedures
- Ensure contractor safety compliance
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of experience in HSE, safety engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related role within an industrial environment
- Experience conducting risk assessments and implementing mitigation strategies
- Experience leading incident investigations and corrective actions
- Strong knowledge of OSHA standards and manufacturing safety practices
Preferred
- Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, or OSHA 30
- Experience in regulated environments (ISO, AS9100, or similar)
- Background in hazardous waste management, environmental reporting, or industrial hygiene
- Lean or continuous improvement experience
