Accounting Manager

Accounting Manager – Washington, DC

A boutique, nationally recognized law firm specializing in federally funded programs, healthcare regulatory law, and government grant compliance is hiring an Accounting Manager to serve as its senior internal accounting professional. This role is a direct backfill for a retiring Director, with a full transition period built in.

Responsibilities

• Own the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, and financial reporting to firm leadership
• Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and lines of credit
• Administer payroll and provide light benefits support, including retirement plan coordination
• Maintain IOLTA/trust account compliance and state registrations
• Oversee expense reimbursements and enforce firm-wide expense policy
• Manage and review work performed by outsourced billing, AR, and collections vendor
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
• Coordinate annual audit activities and tax filings with external advisors
• Drive process documentation and internal controls buildout

Qualifications

• 5+ years of accounting experience in professional services or a law firm — law firm background strongly preferred
• Cash basis accounting experience required (not accrual)
• Strong general accounting fundamentals; heavy Excel proficiency
• Polished communicator — this role interfaces directly with partners and firm leadership
• Experience with systems implementations, migrations, or process improvement a plus
