About The League

The League of Women Voters of the Fredericksburg Area is a nonpartisan civic organization serving Fredericksburg and the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, and King George. The League works to promote informed and active participation in government through voter education, civic engagement, public programming, community partnerships, and issue education.

The League does not support or oppose political parties or candidates. All Board members must be willing to work within, and adhere to, the League’s nonpartisan policy, standards, and procedures.

About the Opportunities

The League of Women Voters of the Fredericksburg Area is seeking community-minded leaders to serve in several volunteer Board positions. These are unpaid roles, but each position serves as a voting member of the Board of Directors and helps guide the organization’s work, priorities, and community impact.

We are currently seeking candidates or applicants for the following roles:

  • Director of Membership
  • Director of Communications
  • Director of Program
  • Director of Student and Youth Engagement
  • Treasurer
Open Positions Director of Membership

The Director of Membership leads efforts to recruit, welcome, engage, and retain members. This role helps strengthen the League’s member experience and supports leadership development within the organization.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Welcoming and onboarding new members
  • Supporting member engagement and retention
  • Helping members find meaningful ways to participate
  • Maintaining or supporting membership engagement systems
  • Working with the Board to strengthen member participation and leadership development

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys people, relationship-building, outreach, organization, and community engagement.

Director of Communications

The Director of Communications oversees the League’s internal and external communications. This role helps shape how the League presents its work to members, partners, media, and the public.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Guiding public messaging and media relations
  • Supporting newsletters, social media, website updates, and public-facing materials
  • Helping promote League events, programs, voter education, and community initiatives
  • Coordinating communications volunteers or digital content support when available
  • Ensuring League communications are clear, accurate, accessible, and nonpartisan

Preferred background or skills:

  • Communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, nonprofit communications, or content creation
  • WordPress
  • Canva
  • Adobe Creative Suite or similar design tools
  • Social media content creation
  • Email newsletters or digital campaigns
  • Strong writing, editing, and visual communication skills

This role is ideal for someone who can help make local civic engagement look clear, professional, and accessible to the public.

Director of Program

The Director of Program helps coordinate the League’s local program work, including issue study, civic education, consensus or concurrence processes, and program recommendations.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Coordinating the development and administration of the League’s local program
  • Supporting League studies, issue education, consensus, concurrence, and position-development work when authorized
  • Helping prepare program recommendations for the Annual Meeting
  • Working with the Board to connect League priorities with public education and community needs
  • Helping ensure program work is thoughtful, accurate, nonpartisan, and aligned with League procedures

This role is ideal for someone interested in public policy, government, research, education, civic engagement, facilitation, or community learning.

Director of Student and Youth Engagement

The Director of Student and Youth Engagement helps connect the League’s civic education and voter engagement work with students, young people, schools, colleges, universities, and educational partners.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Serving as a League liaison to educational institutions
  • Coordinating student and youth civic engagement initiatives
  • Supporting student voter registration and civic education efforts
  • Developing partnerships with schools, colleges, universities, and educational organizations
  • Supporting youth programming and civic education curriculum
  • Serving as liaison to recognized student affiliate organizations when active

This role is ideal for someone with experience or interest in education, student affairs, youth programming, civic education, voter engagement, mentorship, or nonprofit/community work.

Treasurer

The Treasurer helps maintain the League’s financial records and supports responsible financial management. Advanced accounting experience is not required, but some background in accounting, bookkeeping, budgeting, finance, nonprofit administration, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Serving as custodian of League funds
  • Depositing and disbursing funds as authorized
  • Maintaining clear financial records
  • Presenting regular financial reports to the Board
  • Presenting an annual financial report to the membership
  • Supporting the annual budget process
  • Arranging an annual financial review of the books, or an audit if required or directed

Preferred background or skills:

  • Basic bookkeeping, accounting, finance, budget, or spreadsheet experience
  • Comfort using online banking or digital financial systems
  • Attention to detail
  • Reliability and confidentiality
  • Willingness to follow established procedures and ask questions when needed

This role is ideal for someone who is organized, careful, and willing to help a local civic nonprofit stay financially responsible and transparent.

General Qualifications

All candidates should be:

  • Committed to nonpartisan civic engagement
  • Willing to follow League policies, procedures, and nonpartisan standards
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace
  • Responsive by email and able to participate in Board communications
  • Organized, collaborative, and reliable
  • Willing to attend Board meetings and participate in League work
  • A resident of Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, or King George
  • A current member of the League of Women Voters of the Fredericksburg Area, or willing to become a member
