Direct Counsel is seeking a Special Counsel to join a nationally recognized litigation firm.

This firm's litigation group is known for delivering resourceful strategies, sophisticated advocacy, and practical results across a wide range of complex disputes. The team combines deep subject matter knowledge with a collaborative, client-centered approach to litigation, arbitration, and trial work.

Position Overview:

Direct Counsel is seeking a Special Counsel with at least seven years of experience to support a busy litigation practice focused on insurance and reinsurance disputes. This senior, non-partnership-track role offers an opportunity to take on substantial responsibility in pretrial and trial matters, with a strong emphasis on arbitration and expert witness work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle a full spectrum of litigation activities including drafting complex legal submissions, preparing witnesses, conducting expert discovery, and participating in trial practice
  • Participate in arbitration proceedings and develop key advocacy skills
  • Work closely with senior attorneys and clients on strategy and execution
  • Help mentor junior attorneys and contribute to the team's collaborative culture
Qualifications:
  • JD or LLM from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Admitted or eligible for admission in New York or the District of Columbia
  • 7+ years of experience handling complex litigation matters
  • Interest and/or experience in insurance and reinsurance disputes (preferred)
  • Strong writing, communication, and advocacy skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities with professionalism and attention to detail
  • Team-oriented mindset and willingness to take initiative in a collaborative environment
Work Location:
  • This role may be based in either New York or Washington, D.C.
  • The firm encourages a hybrid schedule with approximately 60% in-office presence
Compensation:
  • Base salary range: $275,000 to $305,000
  • Eligible for discretionary bonus
  • Comprehensive benefits package provided
