Interim Accounting Manager (Consultant)

About the Role

An emerging, high-growth company is seeking an Interim Accounting Manager (Consultant) to lead day-to-day accounting operations and support the development of scalable financial processes during a period of rapid growth. This individual will oversee a team of four accountants, with responsibility for month-end close, financial reporting, and technical accounting under US GAAP.

This is a highly hands-on leadership role that combines team development with cross-functional partnership across Finance, People, Legal, Data, Product, and Engineering to drive accurate and timely reporting. The engagement offers an opportunity to apply strong technical accounting expertise, leadership, and problem-solving skills to enhance operational effectiveness and support audit readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop a team of four accountants, including setting priorities, reviewing deliverables, and providing ongoing coaching related to technical accounting and process improvements
  • Support the automation of accounting workflows using AI and LLM-enabled tools (e.g., journal entries, reconciliations, flux analysis, and audit support), while promoting thoughtful and responsible adoption across the team
  • Oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and account analyses are accurate, complete, and delivered on schedule
  • Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and flux analyses prepared by the team
  • Lead technical accounting research and documentation under US GAAP, including drafting memos and formalizing accounting positions for complex transactions
  • Support the annual audit process, including coordination of PBC requests and responses in partnership with the Assistant Controller, who serves as the primary liaison to external auditors
  • Partner with the People team on payroll accounting and with cross-functional stakeholders (Finance, Data, Engineering, Product) to scale accounting operations
  • Identify and drive process improvements and automation initiatives leveraging systems such as NetSuite, Workday, and Ramp to enhance efficiency and controls
  • Lead or contribute to strategic accounting initiatives, coordinating cross-functional stakeholders and delivering measurable outcomes

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of accounting and/or audit experience, including at least 2 years of team leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and experience managing or supporting close processes in a high-growth environment
  • Background in public accounting (Big 4 or large firm) and/or industry experience within a high-growth or pre-IPO company
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop accounting professionals
  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite (experience with Numeric and Ramp is a plus), with a demonstrated ability to leverage technology to scale accounting operations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and influence stakeholders
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership and ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • SF Bay Area is a plus
