Position Overview

Fast-growing construction company is seeking a Controller responsible for leading day-to-day accounting operations serving as a hands-on leader overseeing accounting processes while supporting the CFO with financial analysis, forecasting, and strategic initiatives. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role ensures accurate financial reporting, job cost integrity, cash flow visibility, and compliance with GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project accounting
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close
  • Prepare internal financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Maintain chart of accounts and accounting policies

Construction & Job Cost Accounting

  • Oversee job cost system integrity and cost coding discipline
  • Prepare and review monthly Work=in-Progress (WIP) schedules
  • Monitor percent-of-completion revenue recognition
  • Track margin fade/gain and provide variance analysis
  • Review AIA billings and support collections process
  • Ensure change orders and committed costs are properly recorded

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Assist CFO in annual budgeting and forecasting
  • Provide project-level margin analysis
  • Develop and track KPIs including gross margin by project, labor productivity, backlog, overhead absorption rates
  • Identify cost trends and improvement opportunities

Cash Flow & Risk Management

  • Assist CFO with cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and collections
  • Support bonding and surety reporting requirements
  • Ensure compliance with ender covenants

Compliance

  • Manager sales/use tax filings and regulatory compliance
  • Coordinate audit and tax preparation with external CPA firm

Internal Controls & Process Improvement

  • Establish and enforce internal controls
  • Improve accounting workflows and reporting efficiency
  • Evaluate and enhance accounting software and systems
  • Implement scalable processes as the company grows

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and develop accounting staff
  • Provide training on job costing and financial procedures
  • Promote accountability and accuracy within the department

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • 7+ years of accounting experience with 3+ years in construction
  • Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, percent-of-completion accounting, AIA progress billing
  • Experience with construction accounting software (ComputerEase)
  • Advanced Excel proficiency

Preferred

  • CPA designation
  • Experience in commercial concrete or heavy civil construction
  • Experience working in a multi-entity or high-growth environment
