JOB OVERVIEW :

The Special Education Instructional Assistant, under the direction of the Special Education Teacher and the supervision of program administration, provides the necessary academic assistance to students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and general education students who have been identified by the Student Study Team (SST). The Special Education Instructional Assistant may work with the students on a one-to-one basis or in a small group in the learning center classroom, general education classroom, other instructional settings, and/or playground/play areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
  • Implement the behavior plan developed to support the identified individual throughout the school day and setting • Maintain a safe learning environment for the identified individual, classroom peers and staff with whom the individual interacts
  • Reinforce concepts presented by the general and special education teachers
  • Perform record keeping (daily data on instruction and/or behavior)
  • Model appropriate strategies for personnel serving the identified student and/or other students requiring behavioral intervention
  • Support the goals and objectives of classroom activities by preparing materials and obtaining required supplies or equipment
  • Facilitate and support social interactions and foster the development of positive relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers
  • Participate in additional training as designated by supervising staff and/or administration
  • Assume other duties as assigned by certificated staff or outlined in the individual's behavior plan
  • Provide supervision of students on playground during recess and lunch
JOB REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS
  • A high school education is the minimal educational requirement for this position; college training is preferable.
Knowledge of:
  • English language and usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic math
  • Stages of child development and diverse learning styles
  • Age-appropriate activities, classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct
  • Safe practices in classroom and on the playground
  • Health standards and practices
Ability to:
  • Communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality and use discretion
  • Learn, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Maintain a clean, safe and orderly environment
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Handle emergencies in a calm and effective manner

  • Provide academic support for individual and/or small group of students, grades K-8

  • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance
  • Lift up to 50lbs. (pre-employment physical required)
