The Medical Provider at the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment Facility plays a pivotal role in delivering compassionate, evidence-based medical care to individuals facing substance use challenges. This provider will be responsible for comprehensive assessments, medication management, and coordination of care within a multidisciplinary team to support recovery and long-term wellness.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
  • Conduct thorough medical evaluations of patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions
  • Develop and manage individualized treatment plans that integrate pharmacological and behavioral strategies
  • Prescribe and monitor medications for addiction treatment (e.g., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) in accordance with federal and state regulations
  • Monitor for potential drug interactions, medication adherence, and adverse reactions
  • Support detoxification processes and medically-assisted withdrawal, where applicable
  • Provide ongoing assessment and documentation of patient progress, modifying treatment plans as needed
  • Deliver basic physical health services and address co-existing medical conditions or refer out as appropriate
Collaboration and Teamwork
  • Work closely with addiction counselors, behavioral health clinicians, case managers, and nursing staff
  • Participate in case reviews, treatment planning meetings, and discharge coordination
  • Engage families and support systems (as appropriate) to promote recovery
  • Maintain open and collaborative communication across care teams
Documentation and Compliance
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and confidential documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Comply with federal (SAMHSA, DEA), state (New Jersey Department of Health), and facility-specific regulations
  • Maintain up-to-date patient charts, lab results, medication logs, and progress notes
Professional Development
  • Stay current with best practices in addiction medicine, harm reduction, and integrated care
  • Attend required training in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) relevant to addiction care
  • Contribute to mentorship and training of interns if applicable
Quality Improvement
  • Participate in facility-wide initiatives to improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction
  • Support efforts to measure and enhance program effectiveness and treatment engagement
  • Help implement and refine evidence-based practices and clinical protocols
Qualifications

Education
  • MD, DO, NP, or PA from an accredited institution with appropriate clinical training
Licensure & Certification
  • Valid license to practice in the State of New Jersey
  • DEA license with MAT waiver (DATA 2000 waiver) required for prescribing buprenorphine or ability to obtain
  • Board Certification in Addiction Medicine or Psychiatry preferred, but not required
  • BLS/CPR certification (current)
Experience
  • Clinical experience in substance use disorder treatment or behavioral health preferred, 1 - 3 years
  • Comfort working with populations with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions
Skills
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical decision-making abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered focus
  • Familiarity with harm reduction and trauma-informed care models
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and documentation standards
  • Familiarity with Office 360 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, etc.)
Work Environment
  • On-site at a licensed SUD treatment facility, which offers medical detox and inpatient services
  • Diverse patient population, including individuals with complex psychosocial needs
  • Flexible schedule may include early mornings, weekends, and participation in an on-call rotation
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods
  • Capacity to handle emotionally sensitive or high-stress interactions
  • Must be able to use standard clinical equipment and technology
