General Counsel
Are you a seasoned legal leader who’s passionate about empowering creativity, strengthening public institutions, and shaping the future of arts and humanities in the District? If so, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) would love to meet you.
We’re looking for a dynamic, strategic, and community‑minded General Counsel to serve as our senior legal advisor and help guide the agency’s mission to support the District’s vibrant arts and humanities ecosystem.
What You’ll DoAs CAH’s top legal voice, you will play a central role in agency-wide planning, policymaking, and operational leadership. In this role, you will:
- Advise the Executive Director on legal strategy, policy decisions, and emerging issues.
- Review and draft complex legal documents, contracts, and agreements that shape our programs and partnerships.
- Research, analyze, and interpret laws and proposed legislation to ensure agency compliance and to support thoughtful, informed decision-making.
- Lead CAH’s legal efforts in administrative proceedings and coordinate with outside counsel on judicial matters.
- Prepare testimony and briefing materials for hearings before the Council of the District of Columbia, the CAH Commission, and other public forums.
- Oversee legal sufficiency reviews for contracts, MOUs, budget materials, statutes, rules, and agencywide policies.
- Manage responses to sensitive and confidential inquiries from District leadership, federal partners, media, and the public.
- Strengthen and refine agency processes, compliance systems, and operational policies to promote ethical, lawful, and effective governance.
- Serve as a trusted problem-solver for complex legal and operational challenges.
We’re seeking a collaborative, mission‑driven legal professional who loves multifaceted work, thrives in a public‑interest environment, and leads with clarity and confidence.
To shine in this role, you must have:
- A JD or LLB from an ABA‑accredited law school.
- At least ten (10) years of post‑JD professional legal experience.
- Deep experience with complex rulemaking, policy work, or legal proceedings.
- Demonstrated skill in crafting legal analyses, briefs, memoranda, and policy documents.
- Experience representing an organization and communicating legal positions clearly and effectively.
- Expertise advising leadership on sophisticated legal and policy matters.
- Membership in good standing with the DC Bar — or eligibility to waive in within 360 days of appointment.
