Job Overview

Under minimal supervision, the radiation therapist administers ionizing radiation to patients, following the directives and prescriptions provided by the radiation oncologist, in line with established standards in radiation therapy technology.

Hours: 40 hours per week / Day Shift (Monday - Friday)

Location: Lowell General Hospital - 295 Varnum Avenue - Lowell, MA

(We have two full-time positions available for this role)

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree in Radiologic Science.
  • Certification in Radiation Therapy from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Radiation Control Board.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • At least one year of experience in radiation therapy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three years of experience in radiation therapy.
Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

  • Administers the prescribed therapy accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Verifies prescription details, consent forms, diagnosis, patient identification, and treatment schedules before administering doses.
  • Communicates procedures to patients to alleviate their concerns.
  • Reinforces the radiation oncologist’s guidance regarding treatment reactions and care for the affected area.
  • Monitors patients for any adverse reactions to radiation treatment and reports findings to the radiation oncologist or nursing staff.
  • Prepares the treatment room and equipment according to the prescription, including immobilization devices and positioning.
  • Escorts patients to and from treatment areas.
  • Safely transfers patients from stretchers and wheelchairs to treatment couches, using proper body mechanics.
  • Continuously monitors patients during treatment and simulation, ready to halt treatment and assist if necessary.
  • Assists the radiation oncologist during simulations.
  • Supports dosimetry procedures, including calculations and contours.
  • Participates in weekly treatment visits.
  • Engages in patient chart conferences.
  • Conducts daily physics checks on all equipment to identify any malfunctions and reports findings accordingly.
  • Maintains accurate daily records of treatments received, total doses, and any port films taken, ensuring clarity and organization in patient charts.
  • Utilizes the IMPAC computer system for charge capture, scheduling, and checklists.
  • Copies films and charts as needed.
  • Performs minor clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling patients, and photocopying.
  • Takes weekly port films in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Obtains external films and reports as necessary.
  • Keeps the therapy department organized and clean, focusing on patient areas and laundry/linen spaces.
  • Transfers blocks into the treatment room and organizes them according to guidelines.
  • Maintains the film file area in an orderly manner.
  • Prepares technical aspects of patient charts and labels simulation films appropriately.
  • Executes diagnostic procedures using sterile techniques when required.
  • Regularly checks accessory equipment for malfunctions and notifies the appropriate personnel for repairs.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent standing, occasional sitting and walking, and lifting of 30-35 lbs.
  • Pushing, pulling, and moving stretchers and machines.
  • Requires manual dexterity for operating diagnostic equipment and computer keyboards.
  • Hearing and vision must be sufficient to perform examinations, observe patients, read monitors and documents, and hear alarms.
  • Close contact with patients who may have contagious diseases.
  • Exposure to radiation used in patient treatment.
  • Frequent interactions with patients, physicians, families, and other hospital personnel.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology to evaluate laboratory data and tailor ultrasound examinations to individual patients safely and accurately.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail is crucial for ensuring patient education, safety, and comfort, as well as for discussing clinical situations with physicians.
  • Ability to maintain concentration for extended periods while treating patients.
  • Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care in the assigned service area.
  • Ability to work independently while seeking assistance when necessary.
  • Exhibits good judgment and problem-solving skills, remaining focused and professional.
  • Responds calmly and appropriately to changes in the work schedule.
  • Collaborates effectively with co-workers and management to foster a high-quality patient care environment.
  • Knowledge of handling blocks and proper use of all equipment.
  • Familiarity with standard practices that ensure quality care.
