Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Will be on the bus when the first child boards the bus and remain until the last child departs the bus, will exit the bus and assist all children when loading or unloading, will provide a consistent environment, discipline, and guidance for the children while on the bus, and will deliver papers to/from staff and parents. Children will be counted in ALL transitions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assisting the driver in transporting children to and from the Head Start center, on field trips, and to service providers in a manner that meets Head Start transportation rules and regulations.

  2. Informing children of bus safety and requirements to enforce rules and regulations, and providing positive discipline and guidance for children.

  3. Monitoring children's behavior for diffusing situations and/or preventing distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students.

  4. Communicating with teachers about any behavioral issues.

  5. Delivering/receiving the child to/from the parent/guardian or authorized person.

  6. Checking the child restraint for each child and restraining him/her with a seat belt before the vehicle is put in motion.

  7. Keeping all children seated until the bus is fully stopped and preparation for unloading has been completed.

  8. Not allowing the children to depart the bus upon arrival at the center until an authorized staff member is at the bus to escort the children into the classroom.

  9. Checking the bus to ensure all children have exited the bus upon arrival at the classroom or at the end of the run.

  10. Assisting the bus driver in maintaining the interior cleanliness of the bus to maintain the appearance, sanitation, and safety of the vehicle.

  11. Communicating with parents, teachers, bus drivers, or administration regarding activities, special pickup/drop-off schedules, and conveying/receiving information.

  12. Assisting in conducting emergency evacuation drills to ensure efficiency of procedures and comply with mandated requirements.

  13. Preparing written materials (e.g., student bus logs, emergency information, evacuation drills, seating chart, route descriptions, etc.) to document activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.

  14. New hires must complete the Orientation of Child Care and Educational Professions (New Staff Orientation) within 90 days of initial hire. All staff must complete 18 hours of CHR-approved training annually.

  15. Other duties as assigned by the Head Start Director and/or Supervisor.

EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid Kentucky Driver’s License.

• Must have a high school diploma or GED and be able to read, write, and communicate with children, parents, and Head Start staff.

• Must demonstrate warmth and concern for children.

• Must complete a medical examination that indicates the person is physically capable of performing assigned duties and does not have any communicable disease; and a tuberculin skin test/screening that indicates the person does not have active tuberculosis.

• Must be capable of maintaining confidentiality.

• Must attend trainings as stipulated herein or requested by immediate supervisor and/or Head Start Director to obtain required child care hours.

• Must be capable of lifting children and/or equipment to position or reposition children as appropriate.

• Follow universal precautions when caring for the hygiene needs of children.
