Fitness Specialist
The Terraces at Los Altos, a HumanGood community located in Los Altos, California is hiring a Fitness Specialist Full-time to join our Wellness Team!
We are looking for an accredited fitness instructor to join our organization and implement training programs for our resident. The fitness specialist is responsible for accurately assessing our residents at the start of their journey, compiling reports, and developing their fitness levels. Our Fitness Specialist actively incorporates our “Philosophy for person-directed Care.” You would develop an awareness of residents’ interests and needs, and assist residents to maximize their independence and participation They should be able to assist clients in reaching their goals, and have a passion and drive for health, wellness, and fitness.

You should distinguish yourself as an outstanding fitness instructor in a highly competitive market while still being a team player. Ultimately, an exceptional Fitness Specialist will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, and be able to add value to a growing organization.
Full Time position | Schedule: Monday - Friday (weekends as needed for events and outings scheduled on the activity calendar)
Salary pay range: $28.85 to $35.55 per hour based on experience
Work Duties:
- Meet with residents to understand interests, physical abilities, wellness goals, and participation preferences in order to recommend appropriate fitness and lifestyle activities.
- Lead group fitness, strength, balance, mobility, stretching, walking, aquatic, or other wellness classes, as appropriate to the community’s programs, equipment, and resident needs.
- Develop and support resident-centered exercise and wellness plans that promote safe physical activity, independence, social engagement, and everyday well-being.
- Educate and encourage residents regarding fitness participation, safe movement, physical self-management, and wellness-related goals.
- Plan, coordinate, promote, and participate in lifestyle and activity programs, which may include educational programs, games, creative activities, social events, outings, and wellness-focused events.
- Prepare and maintain activity and fitness calendars, schedules, sign-ups, participation records, and related documentation.
- Encourage resident participation in group and individual programs, including adapting activities for residents who may not attend larger group settings.
- Inspect fitness areas and equipment for safe operating condition; report maintenance, safety, or equipment concerns in accordance with community procedures.
- Provide instruction to residents and team members on safe and proper use of fitness equipment and activity materials.
- Support compliance with applicable community policies, safety expectations, documentation practices, and regulatory requirements related to resident activities and wellness programming.
- Coordinate with activity assistants, volunteers, or other team members supporting programs, including assigning routine tasks, providing direction during activities, and helping maintain program standards.
- Assist with volunteer coordination, orientation, and scheduling as assigned.
- Conduct or assist with activity documentation audits, quality reviews, or program evaluations as assigned.
- Attend required meetings, in-service training, and continuing education programs.
- Conduct work in a safe manner and in compliance with the community’s safety program, infection control practices, and resident rights requirements.
- Provide courteous, professional, and responsive service to residents, families, visitors, vendors, and team members.
- Support the HumanGood Experience Behaviors and contribute to a culture of successful aging, person-directed care, teamwork, accountability, curiosity, and adaptability.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate degree or coursework in fitness, exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, gerontology, health education, recreation therapy, social work, psychology, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
- One or more years of experience leading fitness, wellness, recreation, activities, or resident programming, preferably with older adults.
- Ability to lead group activities and fitness programs safely and effectively for residents with varying abilities and interests.
- Basic understanding of fitness equipment safety, group instruction, resident engagement, and activity planning.
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with residents, families, visitors, volunteers, and team members.
- Basic computer skills sufficient to complete calendars, schedules, documentation, participation records, and routine communications.
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, gerontology, health education, recreation therapy, or related field preferred
