Greenspire School, located in Traverse City, is hiring an On Call Guest Teacher.

The Greenspire School offers a unique educational program for high school students based on purposeful connections between individuals, communities, and the environment for grades 6th - 12th. Under the direction of the Head of School, the Teacher will plan and deliver course instruction for high school students. Additionally, the Teacher will collaborate with other instructors to design project-based learning units that connect to multiple disciplines and/or real-world issues.

Job Summary

The On-Call Guest Teacher provides classroom coverage for teachers who are absent and supports a safe, productive, and positive learning environment for students. This position follows lesson plans and school expectations, supervises students, and maintains continuity of instruction while working collaboratively with school staff. The On-Call Guest Teacher may be called upon to provide coverage on an as-needed basis across various grade levels and subject areas.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the classroom teacher.

  • Provide appropriate instruction and learning activities based on the teacher's plans and school expectations.

  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and productive classroom environment.

  • Supervise students and reinforce established classroom and school behavior expectations.

  • Take accurate attendance and maintain required classroom records.

  • Monitor student engagement and provide assistance as appropriate.

  • Maintain classroom routines and procedures throughout the school day.

  • Communicate relevant student concerns, classroom issues, or incidents to the appropriate school staff.

  • Follow school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.

  • Assist with student transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned supervision duties as needed.

  • Leave the classroom organized and communicate important information to the returning teacher or designated school staff.

  • Participate in required training and meetings as assigned.

  • Regular and predictable attendance when accepting an assignment.

Cognitive Demands:

  • Supervise and manage multiple students in a classroom setting.

  • Follow and implement lesson plans and established classroom procedures.

  • Adapt to different grade levels, subjects, and classroom environments.

  • Exercise sound judgment when responding to student needs or behavioral concerns.

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and productive learning environment.

  • Communicate effectively with students and school staff.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and move throughout the school environment.

  • Occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and other school settings.

  • Withstand moderate noise levels throughout the school environment.

  • Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.

  • Assist/lift students, as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelor's degree or completion of college coursework preferred.

  • Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting preferred.

  • Ability to effectively manage a classroom and maintain appropriate student behavior.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to follow lesson plans and school procedures with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to adapt quickly to different grade levels, subjects, and classroom environments.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.

  • Ability to meet all applicable state, district, and school employment requirements, including successful completion of required background checks.
