Mechanical Department Manager

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Department Manager to lead a multidisciplinary mechanical design team supporting projects across multiple offices. This is a hands-on leadership position combining people management, technical oversight, project execution, quality assurance, and business development support .

The Mechanical Department Manager will oversee mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection design activities while serving as a senior technical resource for complex projects. This individual will be responsible for developing and mentoring staff, maintaining high design and QA/QC standards, coordinating across engineering disciplines, and ensuring projects are delivered effectively and in accordance with applicable codes and requirements.

The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer with significant building systems design experience who enjoys both leading people and remaining technically involved in project delivery .

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop the mechanical and plumbing design team across multiple office locations.
  • Oversee project status, workload, scheduling, and resource allocation across mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection disciplines.
  • Conduct performance reviews and create training and professional development plans for department staff.
  • Mentor engineers and designers through technical guidance, feedback, and career development.
  • Delegate day-to-day design responsibilities while remaining a hands-on technical resource for the team.
  • Provide technical direction and serve as Engineer of Record on selected projects.
  • Lead the development of building mechanical and plumbing systems, designs, details, plans, and specifications.
  • Support and maintain QA/QC standards across mechanical and plumbing projects.
  • Perform independent quality reviews on projects outside of your direct responsibility.
  • Partner with project managers to ensure design work remains aligned with project schedules and requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with other engineering disciplines to deliver complete, integrated project solutions.
  • Review and interpret UFCs, RFPs, Statements of Work (SOWs), and Task Order Proposal Requests (TOPRs) .
  • Support business development efforts, including technical input and fee proposal development for new projects.
  • Travel periodically to satellite and regional offices to support teams and maintain consistency across locations.
  • Support sustainable and high-performance building design initiatives.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license .
  • Current NCEES registration .
  • Licensed mechanical design experience .
  • Building design experience within one or more of the following:
    • Healthcare and medical office facilities
    • Commercial buildings
    • Municipal facilities
    • Federal or state government facilities
    • Office buildings
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing engineers and designers.
  • Experience conducting performance reviews, mentoring employees, and developing technical talent.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and plumbing building systems and applicable industry codes.
  • Experience providing technical oversight and QA/QC for complex engineering projects.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively across multiple engineering and design disciplines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • LEED, Green Globes, or comparable sustainability credentials
  • Healthcare Facility Design Professional certification
  • High-Performance Building Design Professional certification
