Position Overview

Our client is a large, privately held real estate development and investment organization seeking an experienced Trust Accounting Manager to join its corporate accounting organization.

This is a newly created position that will take ownership of accounting and financial reporting for complex Trust and Master entities while partnering closely with senior Accounting and Tax leadership. The role offers significant exposure across the organization, including complex real estate transactions, partnership accounting, tax matters, capital activity, and financial reporting.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical accounting foundation with experience across real estate, partnership accounting, financial reporting, and tax. Candidates coming from a public accounting firm where they supported privately held real estate clients are particularly attractive.

Key Responsibilities

Trust Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Own accounting and financial reporting activities for Trust and Master entities
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of entity-level financial statements
  • Maintain books and records and complete/review balance sheet reconciliations
  • Prepare and coordinate capital calls and cash flow activity
  • Calculate, allocate, record, and track intercompany revenues, expenses, and notes
  • Partner with senior accounting leadership on the preparation and review of Trust financial statements
  • Ensure accounting activity is appropriately recorded in accordance with U.S. GAAP
  • Research and resolve complex accounting and reporting matters

Tax Accounting & Compliance

  • Prepare and maintain tax workpapers and supporting schedules
  • Analyze and reconcile book-to-tax accounting differences
  • Partner closely with internal Tax and Accounting teams
  • Assist with tracking and recording state and federal income tax liabilities, refunds, and payments
  • Support tax-related accounting requirements across multiple legal entities

Complex Real Estate Transactions

  • Support accounting for ownership and entity structure changes
  • Assist with accounting related to acquisitions and dispositions
  • Support financing transactions and related accounting
  • Record and account for 1031 exchanges
  • Evaluate accounting implications associated with other complex real estate and ownership transactions
  • Coordinate across Accounting, Tax, Finance, and other internal stakeholders to ensure transactions are properly recorded

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Accounting required
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of both U.S. GAAP and tax accounting
  • Real estate accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Strong technical accounting foundation with exposure to:
  • Partnership accounting
  • Multi-entity accounting
  • Financial reporting
  • Intercompany accounting
  • Tax accounting
  • Balance sheet reconciliations
  • Capital and cash activity
  • Experience with privately held entities and complex ownership structures preferred
  • Exposure to acquisitions, dispositions, financings, and/or 1031 exchanges highly desirable
  • Strong analytical and technical accounting research capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • High degree of accuracy, integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and accounting systems proficiency

  • Mid-sized or regional public accounting firm experience
  • Audit and/or tax experience supporting privately held real estate companies
  • Combination of public accounting and private industry real estate experience
  • Partnership and complex entity accounting
  • Book-to-tax accounting and tax workpaper preparation
  • Private real estate development, investment, or ownership environments
  • Experience working directly with Controllers, CFOs, Tax leadership, and ownership groups
