Emergency Medical Technician (PT / Per Diem)

Under direction of the Chief and Assistant Chief, an EMT will provide emergency medical care and transportation for all patients encountered in the pre-hospital setting in accordance with regional protocols.

Duties

1. Provides definitive emergency medical care and transportation for all patients encountered including but not limited to BLS pre-hospital assessment, patient monitoring, dressing wounds, use of specialized equipment, etc.
2. Will be prepared to encounter and treat a wide range of patients according to New York State & Regional BLS protocols, but not limited to; patients with communicable diseases, violent or abusive patients, severely injured or maimed patients, patients in extreme emotional distress, etc.
3. Must ensure BLS checklist is complete at start of each shift and resupply stock of medical equipment throughout shift as needed in order to meet or exceed DOH, OSHA and TONEMS standards.
4. Complete all documentation for each call as required by the end of your shift or in a timely manner, including but not limited to PCRs and Incident Reports.
5. Determine patient care needs then ensure all patient documentation is transferred to appropriate persons upon turning over another BLS provider or emergency room staff member with clearance and authority to take in patient for registration.
6. Guide new members with completing orientation requirements and checklist paperwork.
7. Assist with training members for OSHA, Blood borne pathogens, HazMat, Duty Crew Chief and Driver Orientation.
8. Ensuring Ambulance supplies and equipment meet TONEMS BLS standards as defined by the Chief.
9. Ensures Quality Assurance / Quality Improvement and documentation standards of all calls are being completed with follow up meetings being conducted as required.
10. Ensures post call briefings of all calls are being completed with follow up meetings being conducted as required.
11. May assist in coaching and development of other members, MCI leadership, landing zone coordination, driving and squad leading.
12. Must participate in OSHA mandated programs.
13. If highest member present in chain of command, EMT is responsible for all crew/member concerns, situations, building/grounds and vehicle situations.
14. Ensure by end of shift ambulance is stocked and ready for the next crew to inspect and transport.
15. PCRs are completed in a timely manner or by end of shift.
16. Complete tasks assigned by Chief/Assistant Chief/Coordinators.
17. Adheres to all TONEMS policies, procedures and the constitution.
18. Attends all TONEMS required trainings.
19. Conducts themselves as a representative of TONEMS Squad in and out of uniform while on or off shift in accordance with SOPs.

Job Functions

1. Adheres to NYS DOH EMS regarding recommended standards of care including but not limited to CME requirements and skill requirements.
2. Safely operates all TONEMS vehicles according to the TONEMS policy and procedure and New York State Vehicle and Traffic regulations.
3. Restocks ambulance supplies as needed.
4. Ensures cleanliness according to OSHA & TONEMS policies and requirements.
5. Keeps ambulance in response ready mode at all times.
6. Understands operation & procedures of all equipment on TONEMS vehicles.
7. Work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
8. Communicate with other members of TONEMS and dispatch via radio while understanding TONEMS radio etiquette and channel assignments.
9. Identifies opportunities for continuous process improvement within the organization.
10. OSHA refuse disposal, including Bloodborne pathogens and HazMat.
11. Daily station housekeeping chores and maintenance.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Must be at least 18 years of age
2. Must possess at time of employment and maintain a valid New York State Emergency Medical Technician certification.
3. Must possess current CPR certification.
4. Must meet the requirements as described by the New York State Department of Health and TONEMS EMT- Career job description.
5. Must possess at time of employment and maintain a valid, insurable New York State Driver’s license.
6. Must be able to safely lift 250 lbs. as part of a 2 (two) person crew.
7. Must be able to communicate verbal and written thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively including but not limited to use of radios and telephones.
8. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
9. May not hold any elected office with the TONEMS Squad, Inc.
10. Must complete TONEMS Duty Crew Chief training to the satisfaction of their preceptor and the Chief/Assistant Chief of Operations.

Work Environment:

The position of EMT-B entails work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. At times the EMT-B may encounter dangerous environments, including but not limited to: toxic fumes, radiation, communicable diseases, hazardous materials or fire, violent or abusive patients. The EMT-B will take all necessary precautions to protect him/herself from injury at all times.
