SALARY: $175,000-$200,000 annually with full benefits; commensurate with experience

Position SummarySAHF seeks an experienced, entrepreneurial, and collaborative leader to serve as its Vice President of Real Estate Finance & Portfolio Health.
Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the Vice President will lead SAHF's body of work focused on portfolio health, real estate finance, and sustainability. Working closely with SAHF members, lenders, investors, philanthropic organizations, government agencies, and other industry partners, the Vice President will help shape SAHF's strategy in these areas while developing new initiatives, convening industry leaders, and positioning SAHF as a trusted thought leader on the long-term financial health and resilience of nonprofit affordable housing organizations and their portfolios.
The Vice President will serve as a key thought partner to the President & CEO in helping shape SAHF's strategic priorities, identify emerging opportunities for member value, strengthen external partnerships, and support the organization's fundraising efforts.
This is both a strategic leadership and highly external-facing role requiring deep expertise in affordable housing finance, preservation, and portfolio management, as well as the ability to build partnerships, cultivate new initiatives, and translate emerging industry trends into meaningful value for SAHF members.
Primary Responsibilities- Lead SAHF's body of work focused on portfolio health, real estate finance, and sustainability.
- Identify emerging challenges and opportunities affecting nonprofit affordable housing owners and their portfolios.
- Monitor trends affecting affordable housing portfolios, including capital markets, insurance, operating costs, resilience, and preservation finance.
- Develop new initiatives related to preservation, recapitalization, asset management, real estate finance, sustainability, and long-term portfolio resilience.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the President & CEO on issues affecting members' portfolios and organizational sustainability.
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for SAHF's sustainability work, including supervision of the Energy & Sustainability Manager. This body of work should integrate within the broader portfolio health and real estate finance portfolio.
- Guide the continued evolution of SAHF's work related to sustainability, resilience, energy efficiency, and innovative financing approaches that support decreased operational and development costs that ultimately supports long-term portfolio health.
- Ensure SAHF's sustainability initiatives continue to evolve in response to member needs, market trends, and the changing policy landscape.
- Lead SAHF's Asset Management and Development Peer Groups in partnership with the SVP Policy/Chief Operating Officer. Oversee SAHF’s Energy & Sustainability Peer Group, supporting SAHF’s Energy & Sustainability Manager’s leadership of this workstream. This includes designing and facilitating peer exchange programming, roundtables, webinars, and retreats (often with external partners included).
- Convene members around emerging operational, development, acquisition, and preservation challenges; identify recommended best practices and policy solutions on these issues.
- Represent SAHF externally through conference presentations, industry coalitions, publications, podcasts, and stakeholder meetings.
- Explore and develop white papers, issue briefs, case studies, practical guidance, and other potential publications or work products for members and the broader industry.
- Help elevate SAHF's voice as a trusted convener, respected thought leader, and strategic partner on issues related to portfolio health, preservation, real estate finance, and sustainability.
- Partner with the President & CEO to develop compelling proposals for corporate and foundation partners that advance SAHF's strategic priorities within the portfolio area.
- Cultivate relationships with philanthropic organizations, financial institutions, and other industry partners to support new initiatives.
- Help identify emerging opportunities for strategic partnerships and collaborative funding initiatives that expand SAHF's impact and value to members.
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in multifamily asset management, development, lending, preservation, or related fields. Experience working for a nonprofit affordable housing owner/developer, affordable housing lender, Housing Finance Agency, CDFI, GSE, or similar organization.
- Strong understanding of one or more of the following areas: affordable housing portfolio management, preservation transactions, capital structures, and long-term ownership strategies.
- Familiarity with federal and state programs and financing tools that support the multifamily affordable housing industry, including but not limited to HUD, Treasury, GSEs, capital markets, and state Housing Finance Agencies.
- Knowledge of sustainability, resilience, and how utility costs impact affordable housing development and operational costs.
- Exceptional strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships, convene stakeholders, and facilitate peer learning among senior leaders.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Experience developing proposals for corporate and philanthropic partners is preferred but not required so long as the candidate has excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Existing relationships across the affordable housing industry.
- Experience leading cross-sector collaborations involving public, private, and nonprofit partners.
