Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Medical Transcriptionist to accurately transcribe, edit, proofread, and format medical documentation dictated by physicians and other healthcare professionals.
The Medical Transcriptionist will work with medical dictation, electronic health records, transcription software, and other clinical documentation systems to ensure patient records are accurate, complete, properly formatted, and available within established turnaround times.
The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical abbreviations, grammar, spelling, and healthcare documentation standards, along with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Transcribe dictated medical reports from physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Transcribe and process documentation including:
- Patient histories and physical examinations
- Consultation reports
- Operative reports
- Emergency department documentation
- Discharge summaries
- Diagnostic and imaging reports
- Pathology reports
- Progress notes
- Other clinical documentation
- Review and edit speech-recognition or computer-generated drafts for accuracy.
- Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting, and medical terminology.
- Interpret medical abbreviations and terminology accurately.
- Identify inconsistencies, missing information, or potential transcription errors and obtain clarification when necessary.
- Ensure reports accurately reflect the provider's dictation without altering clinical meaning.
- Enter and update completed reports within the appropriate EHR or medical records system.
- Maintain established transcription turnaround times and productivity standards.
- Proofread completed reports before final submission.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of protected health information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
- Maintain accurate electronic records and documentation.
- Communicate professionally with physicians, clinical staff, laboratory personnel, medical records staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain familiarity with current medical terminology, procedures, medications, anatomy, and healthcare documentation practices.
- Perform additional medical records or documentation duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Formal education or training in medical transcription, medical terminology, health information management, or a related field preferred.
- Previous medical transcription experience in a hospital, physician practice, laboratory, pathology, radiology, or other healthcare environment.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proofreading skills.
- Strong typing and computer skills.
- Ability to accurately interpret complex medical dictation.
- Ability to work independently while meeting established productivity and turnaround requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of professional medical transcription experience.
- Experience transcribing pathology, radiology, surgical, or hospital documentation.
- Experience with voice-recognition transcription software.
- Experience working with electronic health records (EHR/EMR).
- Familiarity with transcription platforms and medical documentation systems.
- RHDS, CHDS, CMT, or other relevant medical transcription/health information certification is a plus but not required.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a highly accurate and experienced medical transcription professional who can listen carefully to complex medical dictation, recognize medical terminology and abbreviations, identify inconsistencies, and produce clear, professional clinical documentation.
Candidates with experience supporting hospital, pathology, radiology, surgical, or physician-office environments are encouraged to apply.
Compensation
$20.00–$25.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
This is approximately $41,600–$52,000 annually based on a 40-hour workweek, before overtime or additional compensation.
Experienced candidates with strong hospital transcription, pathology/radiology transcription, EHR, and speech-recognition experience may be considered toward the upper end of the range.
Work Environment
This position operates in a professional healthcare/medical-records environment and requires frequent interaction with clinical documentation and protected health information.
The successful candidate must be able to manage a high-volume workload, maintain accuracy under deadlines, and consistently protect patient confidentiality.
