The pharmacy operates Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, remaining closed on weekends and recognized holidays. This role involves professional interactions with both patients and staff within the clinic and the nearby hospital.
Job SummaryThe Pharmacy Technician will prepare medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. Responsibilities include measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and documenting medication amounts and dosages as per prescription orders. In a retail or community pharmacy context, the technician will assist pharmacists in compounding, preparing, and dispensing prescriptions to the public based on information received from customers or patients.
Key responsibilities include:
- Maintaining proper storage and security for medications.
- Ensuring equipment is functioning correctly and aiding in maintenance and repairs.
- Managing inventory levels to guarantee sufficient supplies.
- Assisting with billing functions.
- Supporting departmental quality assurance and other patient-focused services under supervision.
- Contributing to a safe working environment that complies with state laws and regulations.
- Utilizing multiple computer programs effectively.
In a medical center or institutional setting, duties may include unit dose dispensing, IV admixtures, compounding, and operating automated dispensing devices. The technician will assist the pharmacist in delivering pharmaceutical care to patients by adhering to established regulations and practices, including the preparation of IV admixtures. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies as the pharmacy field evolves.
Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is mandatory.
- Iowa: As of July 1, 2010, all pharmacy technicians in Iowa must be nationally certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). If enrolled in a training program or new to the field, registration as a pharmacy technician trainee is required within 30 days of starting employment. Certification must be achieved within 12 months of beginning employment or training.
- Minnesota: Individuals registering for the first time must be at least 18 years old and hold an active pharmacy technician registration with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy. New registrants must complete a pharmacy technician training program provided by our organization (or an equivalent) within 12 months of registration.
- North Dakota: Pharmacy technicians must register with the ND Board of Pharmacy before starting work. Those applying as technicians in training must enroll in an ASHP accredited education program and obtain national certification within the timelines set by the Board to maintain licensure.
- South Dakota: Registration with the SD Board of Pharmacy is required within 30 days of hire. As of September 12, 2024, certification is necessary for specific roles, including those providing immunizations and working in remote pharmacies.
