Position Overview:

The Manager of Sterile Processing will oversee the continuous operations of the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring it runs effectively around the clock. This role involves monitoring inventory levels and usage to guarantee that essential materials for patient care and treatment are readily available. The Manager will also create and enforce policies and procedures regarding the handling, sterilization, cleaning, maintenance, storage, and assembly of medical supplies, equipment, and instruments.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Direct the creation, implementation, and upkeep of internal policies and procedures for the processing, storage, and management of surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Develop and introduce new or revised decontamination and sterilization techniques as necessary.
  • Set departmental goals and objectives.
  • Establish and maintain an organizational framework that supports efficient operations.
  • Assess service delivery systems and procedures, recommending enhancements to boost efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Monitor inventory usage, establish par levels, and initiate purchases as required.
  • Evaluate and recommend new instruments and materials, assisting in their introduction.
  • Collaborate with CPD/OR staff and other hospital departments to create and maintain systems for tracking and distributing processed instruments.
  • Stay informed about current trends and practices in the procurement, processing, and maintenance of medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies through professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Lead hospital and departmental committees and project teams as needed.
  • Manage the recruitment, evaluation, development, and growth of staff members.
  • Oversee scheduling assignments and training initiatives.
  • Address disciplinary actions and other personnel matters as necessary.
  • Coordinate in-service and continuing education programs for staff development in partnership with supervisors and shift managers.
  • Implement procedural changes to ensure compliance with hospital, departmental, and external policies, standards, and regulations.
  • Ensure the completion of required quality monitoring and related data collection.
  • Maintain relevant records and prepare necessary reports.
  • Supervise sterile processing across all shifts (24 hours), including oversight of all sterile processing staff with direct management of shift supervisors.
  • Manage the administration and upkeep of departmental recordkeeping systems, including sensitive administrative and financial data.
  • Act as a role model, striving to meet customer satisfaction standards and using collected data to demonstrate compliance with quality improvement goals.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to effectively manage personnel within the assigned department.
  • Strong communication skills to address conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions, along with proficient writing abilities.
  • Capability to interact and coordinate with employees, vendors, surgeons, and nursing staff.
Education:
  • Completion of two years of specialized education or an associate’s degree.
  • Required field of study: Surgical Technology, Central Processing, or a closely related discipline.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Experience:

A minimum of 7 years of experience as a sterile processing technician, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role.

Licensure/Certifications:

Current certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) is required.
