Our organization is seeking a Transplant Psychiatrist to join the expanding Transplant Psychiatry team within our Transplant Institute. This role will closely collaborate with the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry program at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH). The ideal candidate will contribute to the establishment of comprehensive and multidisciplinary behavioral health services tailored for transplant patients at NSUH, which includes:

  • Providing psychiatric consultations and follow-up care for medical and surgical inpatient transplant candidates and donors.

  • Addressing the psychological, psychiatric, and social challenges related to organ transplantation.

  • Conducting evaluations to determine the suitability of living organ donors.

  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of medical specialists, surgeons, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Assessing and treating patients both before and after transplantation (inpatient and outpatient) who experience behavioral complications due to medical conditions, medications, or co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

This full-time position is part of the Transplant Psychiatry team within the Northwell Transplant Institute, while also being an integral member of the Department of Psychiatry. The role offers diverse academic opportunities, including participation in Psychiatry Grand Rounds, faculty meetings, and faculty development seminars, as well as the training and supervision of psychiatry residents, psychosomatic medicine fellows, and rotating medical students.

The Northwell Transplant Institute encompasses all solid organ transplant programs, including those for heart, lung, liver, and kidney. It maintains strong partnerships with the Departments of Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Psychiatry, and the Lung Institute. Transplant procedures are conducted at two highly ranked hospitals known for their advanced surgical capabilities and specialized staff: North Shore University Hospital and Cohen Children's Medical Center. Patients may receive care at one of our team’s 40+ office locations both before and after their transplant procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Board certification in Psychiatry is required, with advanced training in transplant psychiatry preferred. Candidates with fellowship training in Psychosomatic Medicine (Consultation Liaison Psychiatry) or Addiction Psychiatry are highly desirable.

  • Must possess or be eligible for medical licensure in New York State.

  • A minimum of two years of attending-level experience in either Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry or Addiction Psychiatry, ideally with a focus on transplant psychiatry.

  • Clinical experience within a large healthcare system or academic medical center is preferred.

  • Strong understanding of evidence-based practices in Transplant Psychiatry and quality improvement methodologies.

  • Proven ability to thrive in a collaborative, innovative, and continuously learning environment.
