Home Health Worker / Patient Care Attendant

We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and experienced Home Health Worker to provide full-time personal and daily-living support to a patient with a spinal cord injury. The caregiver should be comfortable assisting with personal hygiene, mobility, medication routines, intermittent catheterization, bowel-care programs, and prescribed physical and occupational therapy exercises. This is a hands-on caregiving position. No injections are required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with prescribed oral medications, including timely reminders, preparation, and documentation.


• Perform or assist with intermittent catheterization (IC), based on training and applicable healthcare guidelines.


• Assist with the patient’s prescribed bowel-management program.


• Support bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and other personal-hygiene needs.


• Safely transfer the patient between the bed, wheelchair, chair, and other locations.


• Assist with repositioning to help prevent pressure sores and maintain patient comfort.


• Perform prescribed range-of-motion, stretching, strengthening, PT, and OT exercises.


• Follow the exercise and mobility plan established by the patient’s physiotherapist or occupational therapist.


• Assist with wheelchair use and other mobility or transfer equipment.


• Maintain a clean and hygienic patient environment, including the patient’s room, bathroom, bedding, and medical equipment.


• Provide light housekeeping directly related to the patient’s care.


• Assist with meal preparation, feeding, hydration, and dietary requirements, when needed.


• Observe and report changes in the patient’s condition, including skin problems, pain, fever, urinary or bowel concerns, or changes in mobility.


• Maintain accurate daily records of medications, catheterization, bowel care, exercises, meals, and other significant observations.


• Provide companionship and respectful emotional support.


• Accompany the patient to medical appointments or therapy sessions when required.


• Follow all instructions provided by the patient, family, physician, nurse, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist.

Qualifications

• Home health aide, nursing assistant, patient care attendant, caregiver, or similar training is preferred.


• CPR and First Aid certification is preferred.

Required Skills

• Prior experience caring for a patient with a spinal cord injury is strongly preferred.


• Experience with intermittent catheterization and bowel-management programs is required or the candidate must be willing and able to complete appropriate training.


• Experience with patient transfers, wheelchair assistance, and safe lifting techniques.


• Familiarity with pressure-sore prevention and skin monitoring.


• Ability to assist with PT and OT exercises according to a prescribed care plan.


• Physically capable of safely assisting with transfers and mobility.


• Able to communicate clearly and maintain daily care records.


• Willing to undergo background and reference checks.

Preferred Skills

• Home health aide, nursing assistant, patient care attendant, caregiver, or similar training is preferred.


• CPR and First Aid certification is preferred.

The caregiver will perform medication assistance, intermittent catheterization, bowel care, and therapy exercises only when appropriately trained and permitted under applicable healthcare regulations.
