Role: Engineering Manager
Employment Type: Permanent
Location: Seattle, WA
Role Summary
Seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of full-stack engineers delivering scalable, cloud-native applications aligned to our Golden Path engineering stack. This role blends hands-on technical leadership with people management, balancing delivery execution, engineering quality, and the growth of your team.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical judgment with proven people-management skills, enabling them to hire, coach, and retain top engineering talent while partnering closely with product, architecture, and business stakeholders to deliver high-impact software. Success in this role requires a bias for execution, strong communication, and a passion for building high-performing engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a hybrid engineering team — full-time engineers and contractors — owning hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development across Junior to Senior levels.
- Partner with product, architecture, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into clear, phased technical roadmaps, balancing competing priorities across teams.
- Drive engineering execution across the full stack (React, TypeScript, Go, Java, Python, Node.js, AWS), ensuring quality, scalability, and reliability — including work delivered by contractors.
- Establish and champion engineering excellence — code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD — and track delivery health through metrics like PR cycle time, deployment frequency, and defect rates.
- Own operational support for your team's systems: logging, on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems to prevent recurring failures.
- Ensure your team's work meets security and compliance standards — data handling and access controls — across both FTE and contractor deliverables.
- Conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, and career coaching, fostering a culture of accountability, growth, and technical excellence.
- Report on team health, delivery metrics, and business impact to senior leadership.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a people-management or engineering leadership role.
- Proven track record hiring, managing, and growing high-performing engineering teams, including experience directing and reviewing work from external contractors or agency partners alongside full-time staff.
- Strong hands-on background across the Golden Path stack (ReactJS, TypeScript, Go, Java, Python, Node.js), with the technical credibility to guide architecture and code-quality decisions.
- Solid understanding of cloud-native architectures (AWS), microservices, CI/CD, and modern DevOps practices.
- Working knowledge of data security and compliance practices — access controls, data privacy — sufficient to guide a team's system and integration design decisions.
- Experience driving Agile/Scrum delivery, sprint planning, and backlog management — protecting the team from over-commitment and making resource trade-offs to ship predictably.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, able to translate technical constraints and delivery risk into clear terms for both technical and non-technical business stakeholders.
Nice to Have Skills
- Experience managing distributed or remote engineering teams across time zones.
- Familiarity with GenAI/LLM application development — prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agent orchestration, or vector databases.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Gemini, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot.
- Experience in real estate technology, marketplace platforms, or customer-facing SaaS products.
- Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Certified Scrum Master (CSM), or similar.
- Prior experience as a Staff or Lead Engineer before transitioning into engineering management.
