About Kuhn Capital Partners

Kuhn Capital Partners is a rapidly growing SEC-registered investment adviser that follows strict compliance protocols. We are hiring for our affiliated private oil and gas fund business, which focuses on the Permian Basin.

Our oil and gas funds invest exclusively on a non-operating basis, primarily alongside major and supermajor oil and gas companies. Third-party operators handle drilling, completions, and field operations.

The funds follow a traditional general partner / limited partner (GP/LP) structure. Our business model is straightforward: raise capital from accredited investors, acquire oil and gas asset packages, and pay distributions. We target proved developed producing (PDP) assets, drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs), and net mineral acreage.

Tax benefits, including intangible drilling cost (IDC) deductions and depreciation associated with tangible drilling costs (TDCs), are a primary motivation for the vast majority of our investors. Accurate tax accounting and investor reporting are central to this business.

We have two active funds, both paying distributions, and plan to launch our next fund in 2027, with a goal of launching a new fund annually. We are also establishing a broker-dealer relationship to expand fundraising.

Baker Tilly provides third-party accounting, and each fund has a third-party administrator and an annual audit.

The Role

We are hiring a hands-on Director of Finance & Accounting to serve as our senior internal finance leader for our oil and gas funds. Working directly with the principals, you will own financial oversight across our funds, manage outside-provider relationships, and turn accounting records and operator information into timely financial decisions.

Operator reporting cycles can cause finalized accounting to lag activity by 60–90 days. Your central responsibility is maintaining a current view of each fund’s cash, expected receipts, incurred but unbilled expenses, capital commitments, and capacity to pay distributions. You will distinguish estimates from confirmed figures and reconcile them as actual results arrive.

This role is suited to an experienced upstream controller or accounting leader who understands non-operated investments and is ready to take ownership of a growing finance function.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the Baker Tilly relationship. Coordinate information flow, review financial statements, oversee close timelines, and ensure accounting records reconcile with bank activity and administrator reporting.

  • Monitor operator billings and revenue. Use EnergyLink and operator portals to review joint interest billings (JIBs), revenue statements, and authorizations for expenditure (AFEs). Investigate discrepancies and resolve them with operators and accounting providers.

  • Own cash forecasting and capital tracking. Maintain a rolling 13-week cash forecast for each fund, track outstanding commitments and expected spending, and explain material differences between forecasts and actual results.

  • Prepare quarterly distribution recommendations. Assess available cash after expenses, commitments, and reserves. Review recommendations with the principals and coordinate approved distributions with the administrator.

  • Manage audit and tax coordination. Oversee provider timelines and supporting documentation, including IDC/TDC classifications, depreciation schedules, partnership allocations, and timely K-1 delivery.

  • Build consistent financial processes. Establish payment controls, approval procedures, and reporting standards, and coordinate accounting setup for each new fund.

What We Are Looking For

  • Substantial upstream accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for non-operated working interests, revenue accounting, JIBs, and AFEs.

  • Experience as a controller, assistant controller, finance director, or senior accounting leader, with the judgment to lead the internal finance function independently.

  • Strong cash forecasting, financial reporting, and Excel skills, including experience estimating financial results when operator information is incomplete or delayed.

  • Knowledge of oil and gas partnership tax accounting, including IDCs, TDCs, and depreciation.

  • The ability to review outside-provider work, reconcile to source documents, and explain assumptions and unresolved issues clearly.

  • A willingness to work directly in the underlying records, take initiative, and follow issues through to resolution.

Preferred: CPA designation, Permian Basin experience, familiarity with EnergyLink, and private fund experience involving GP/LP structures, capital accounts, distributions, and third-party administrators.
