Job Description

TAX COMPLIANCE CONSULTANT

Hybrid - New York City or Washington DC

Estimated 3-6mth contract but could definitely go longer

We are seeking an experienced Tax Compliance Consultant to support a range of nonprofit tax and regulatory compliance initiatives. This individual will work across both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, helping resolve outstanding compliance matters, review historical filings, strengthen existing processes, and establish a more centralized and sustainable approach to ongoing compliance.

The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on experience with nonprofit tax compliance, Form 990 filings, IRS matters, and C3/C4 structures, along with the ability to independently assess issues and drive them through to resolution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and manage outstanding IRS notifications, enhance the existing tracking process, and drive all open items through to full resolution.

  • Review prior Form 990 filings for the 501(c)(4) entity and assist in determining whether amended or additional filings are required.

  • Coordinate with external tax advisors, including Baker Tilly, should historical Form 990s require refiling.

  • Conduct 501(c)(3)/501(c)(4) analysis to confirm that the C4 entity is appropriately paying its full share for services provided by the C3 entity.

  • Review and document cost allocations and inter-entity arrangements to help ensure appropriate separation between the C3 and C4 organizations.

  • Review the organization's existing compliance calendar and filing schedule for completeness and accuracy.

  • Identify outstanding or overdue compliance requirements and assist with bringing filings and other obligations up to date.

  • Assess the current approach to managing compliance responsibilities across multiple departments and identify gaps in ownership, visibility, and oversight.

  • Recommend and help implement an improved centralized compliance tracking and oversight process to manage ongoing filing and regulatory requirements.

  • Potentially support preparation and review of the 2026 C3 and C4 Form 990 filings.

  • Develop a fully reconciled, well-documented Form 990 work file and supporting process that can be replicated efficiently in future years.

  • Partner with internal finance, accounting, legal, and other stakeholders as well as external tax advisors as required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit tax compliance, ideally supporting both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.

  • Strong working knowledge of Form 990 preparation, review, and filing requirements.

  • Experience responding to and resolving IRS notices and compliance matters.

  • Understanding of the tax and compliance considerations associated with relationships between C3 and C4 entities.

  • Experience with shared-service arrangements, cost allocations, or inter-entity transactions within nonprofit organizations.

  • Ability to review historical filings, identify potential gaps, and develop a clear path toward resolution.

  • Experience managing or improving compliance calendars, filing schedules, trackers, and internal controls.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple compliance workstreams simultaneously.

  • Ability to work independently while effectively coordinating with internal stakeholders and external accounting/tax firms.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to create clear, repeatable processes and supporting documentation.
