Job Description

New Business Attorney – Global Law Firm - Tampa, Florida

The Opportunity

A leading international law firm is looking to hire a New Business Attorney to join its global Compliance & New Business function in Tampa.

This is an opportunity to work at the heart of a sophisticated global law firm, advising partners and senior lawyers on conflicts of interest, new business intake and complex matter clearance.

Rather than simply conducting conflicts searches, you will act as a trusted advisor throughout the matter-opening process, working closely with the Office of the General Counsel and providing guidance on complex ethical, regulatory, reputational and commercial issues.

What You'll Do

  • Advise partners and lawyers on conflicts of interest and applicable professional conduct/bar rules
  • Lead conflicts clearance for complex and time-sensitive new matters
  • Work directly with the Office of the General Counsel to resolve potential conflicts and obtain necessary approvals
  • Draft and negotiate conflict waivers and review engagement documentation
  • Assess new matters from an ethical, regulatory, reputational and commercial risk perspective
  • Handle sophisticated conflicts issues arising from M&A, private equity, capital markets, bank finance, restructuring, litigation and other transactional matters
  • Advise on ethical screens, special approvals and other conflict-management measures
  • Act as a senior escalation point for the wider global conflicts team
  • Support incoming lateral partners with conflicts clearance
  • Conduct additional research and investigations where required to support matter approval
  • Assist with time-sensitive matter audits and remediation exercises
  • Develop and deliver conflicts training and mentor more junior team members

What We're Looking For

  • Qualified Attorney with an active Florida Bar membership in good standing – essential
  • At least 3 years of professional attorney experience
  • Corporate or finance legal experience is particularly attractive
  • Previous conflicts, professional responsibility, new business intake or AML experience is advantageous but not essential
  • Experience within a medium or large law firm is strongly preferred
  • Understanding of sophisticated corporate and finance transactions would be beneficial
  • Strong knowledge of professional ethics and an ability to interpret applicable bar rules
  • Excellent commercial judgment and an ability to identify wider reputational risks
  • Comfortable advising partners and senior stakeholders on sensitive and time-critical issues
  • Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
  • International or cross-border experience is advantageous

Why Consider It?

This is a highly visible position within a genuinely global legal environment. You will work directly with partners, senior leadership and the Office of the General Counsel on complex conflicts issues across some of the firm's most sophisticated matters.

The position offers significantly more responsibility than a traditional conflicts analyst role, with the opportunity to lead complex clearances, advise senior lawyers, draft waivers, mentor colleagues and become a trusted advisor within the firm's global risk function.

The role also offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits, paid leave and eligibility for a performance-related bonus.
