Company Description Island Tug & Barge Co. is an independent marine transportation company based in Puget Sound, founded in 1979 and family-operated ever since. The company has grown from a single vessel into a working fleet that moves industrial cargo such as aggregate, cement, deck cargo, and fuel to locations across Puget Sound, the Inside Passage to Ketchikan, and ports including Seattle, Tacoma, DuPont, and Shelton. Island Tug & Barge is committed to reliable service and safe operations, focusing on the people who crew its vessels and the customers who depend on them. The company values experience in Puget Sound and Alaska waters and actively hires USCG-credentialed Masters, Mates, Engineers, and Deckhands. Team members join a close-knit operation with opportunities to contribute directly to regional marine logistics.
Role Description The Engineer is a full-time remote role responsible for overseeing the mechanical and technical performance of assigned vessels, with a focus on safety, reliability, and compliance. Day-to-day responsibilities include monitoring and maintaining engines, propulsion systems, generators, pumps, and auxiliary equipment, and coordinating scheduled inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance.
The Engineer collaborates closely with captains and deck crews to troubleshoot mechanical issues, support safe voyage operations, and document maintenance activities according to company and regulatory standards. The role involves communicating with shore-based management and vendors, ensuring timely access to parts and services, and contributing to continuous improvement of fleet maintenance practices.
This position allows for remote coordination of planning, documentation, and communication, with the expectation of occasional on-site or vessel visits as operational needs require.
