Engagement Manager, Competitive Intelligence
Job Description
At Brass Tacks, we help drug developers see emerging trends, shape clinically meaningful strategies, and make strategic decisions with confidence.
Founded in 2016, we are a boutique consultancy focused on competitive readiness planning for biotech and pharma teams. Our clients are developing some of the most clinically meaningful therapies in the clinic today, for patients with cancer and other diseases. We blend new product planning, intelligence gathering, and scientific communication into reports that are precise, concise, and ready for internal decision-making. Our work spans continuous competitive monitoring, deep dives, target product profiles, scenario-planning workshops, and integrated conference coverage.
We are a small, close-knit team poised for growth. Our greatest asset is our people, and our time-tested mentoring processes help every new team member do their best work quickly.
Brass Tacks is hiring an Engagement Manager to report to our Founder and CEO. You will own day-to-day client relationships and delivery across several engagements, so our leadership can focus on growing the agency. You will lead the process of turning complex scientific, clinical, and market data into intelligence for our client partners. You will work directly with C-suite executives. You will also mentor the team members who support your engagements.
This role is remote and works on US Eastern hours.
Within your first six months, success looks like this: you run your engagements end to end, clients bring their questions to you first, and leadership hears about issues as updates rather than escalations.
Responsibilities
Own client relationships and expectations
- Understand each client's key business questions
- Manage scope, audience, timing, and deliverable format, from kickoff through completion
- Anticipate client needs and act on them before the client asks (as much as possible)
- Resolve day-to-day issues across delivery, communication, staffing, and client concerns quickly, and reset expectations openly when timelines or the landscape change
- Keep leadership informed through updates rather than escalations, so clients feel exceptionally well supported without reactive demands on leadership
Communicate complex science with clarity
- Exchange complex medical and scientific information with physicians, scientists, and C-suite executives accurately and with confidence
- Distill data into client-ready reports where the implication comes before the detail, and present them directly to clients
- Adjust depth and language to each audience, building an understanding for the reader in an easy-to-grasp, clear and concise style
Turn information into intelligence
- Build a thorough understanding of new disease states, competitive landscapes, market dynamics, and global regulatory and commercialization pathways quickly
- Monitor emerging data continuously, flag impactful events, and identify gaps in what clients know
- Triangulate across complex sources to develop defensible takeaways, each mapped clearly to primary sources
- Lead every deliverable to a clear recommendation, and respectfully challenge key decision makers when the evidence calls for it
Run engagements like a boss
- Keep a work plan for each engagement with milestones, owners, and review dates, and reprioritize as timelines shift
- Run projects in a best-in-class manner: proactive, communicative, and efficient
- Hold every deliverable to a high standard of accuracy, with a documented quality check before release
- Follow all external and internal standards for legal and ethical intelligence gathering, and raise any gray area before acting
Grow our projects and our people
- Think ahead to each client's next question and bring follow-on opportunities to leadership
- Contribute to project scoping and proposals, and define and track metrics of success for each engagement
- Mentor and develop the team members on your engagements using our established mentoring processes
- PhD in the life sciences
- 4 to 8 years minimum in life sciences consulting or in market planning at a biotech or pharma company, including prior experience owning client relationships and deliverables
- Ability to interpret and synthesize preclinical and clinical data and identify broad implications or specific opportunities
- Excellent written and oral communication, including presenting complex scientific information to physicians, scientists, and executives
- Demonstrated experience respectfully challenging senior decision makers with evidence
- Solid project management skills: you prioritize workflows, adapt to evolving timelines, and meet deadlines with high attention to detail
- Experience mentoring or developing junior team members, and the ability to describe specifically how you helped someone grow
- A self-directed learner with a growth mindset, intellectual agility, and resilience
- Ability to work remotely on US Eastern hours, starting around 6:30 am Pacific
- Authorized to work in the USA.
- Competitive intelligence or new product planning experience in oncology
- Experience gathering primary intelligence from physicians and key opinion leaders
- Familiarity with ex-US regulatory and commercialization pathways
- Experience contributing to proposals, scoping, or account growth at a consultancy
- Experience at a boutique or growing firm where you helped build processes rather than inherited them
- Experience working at or with Pharma Companies
- Fluency with AI-assisted research and analysis tools
