Medical Laboratory Scientist

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible for performing a wide range of routine and complex clinical laboratory tests to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic results. This role is integral to supporting TrilliumBiO’s mission of advancing molecular and clinical laboratory testing through innovation and precision. The MLS collaborates with the laboratory team to maintain high standards of quality, efficiency, and compliance while contributing specialized expertise in diagnostic testing processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Perform routine and complex diagnostic tests in compliance with established laboratory protocols.


• Analyze and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy and timeliness, with consideration of patient-specific factors such as age or diagnosis.


• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, coordinating repairs and service as necessary.


• Conduct quality control procedures, evaluate results within established parameters, and document corrective actions for any detected issues.


• Adhere to quality assurance practices and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including accreditation and licensure requirements.


• Maintain effective communication with laboratory team members and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth workflow and accurate reporting.


• Assist in training and mentoring laboratory employees, students, and other healthcare professionals in testing methodology and laboratory operations.


• Demonstrate proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for data entry, reporting, and record maintenance, following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).


• Monitor and manage laboratory supplies to ensure availability and cost-effective usage.


• Collaborate with the Laboratory Operations Director and other team members to optimize laboratory workflows and processes.


• Maintain a clean and organized work environment, following all safety protocols and guidelines.


• Participate in other assigned shifts as needed to support laboratory operations.


• Stay updated on advancements in laboratory science and participate in continuing education to enhance professional knowledge and skills.


• Performs phlebotomy tasks, if experienced, as needed, to support laboratory operations.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

• Work requires formal educational background in biology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, and microbiology normally acquired through completion of a two- or four-year post-secondary school program in clinical laboratory technology/medical technology and/or equivalent education and training in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, or related field. BS degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science, preferred. Molecular experience is highly desirable, but not required.


• Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) is required.


• This role is intended for individuals with a minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience or an equivalent work experience related to the discipline.

Physical Demands:

• Frequent standing and sitting, with prolonged periods of work at laboratory benches and computer workstations.


• Occasional lifting and carrying of laboratory supplies or boxes weighing up to 30 -40 pounds.


• Regular use of fine motor skills for specimen handling, pipetting, and data entry.


• Reaching, bending, and crouching to access specimens and equipment.

Work Environment:

• Moderate noise levels typical of a clinical laboratory setting.


• Standard indoor temperatures with occasional exposure to cooler areas for equipment requirements and sample storage.


• Potential exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and infectious agents. Compliance with all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), is mandatory.
