Storage Infrastructure Engineer
Leading Global Hedge Fund
Chicago | Hybrid | Permanent
A leading global hedge fund is seeking an experienced Storage Infrastructure Engineer to design, operate and optimise mission-critical storage platforms across on-premises data centres and AWS.
You will join a high-calibre infrastructure team supporting low-latency trading, research, data analytics and enterprise workloads. This is a hands-on role with broad exposure to enterprise block, file and object storage, high-performance networking, virtualisation, Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure.
The Role
You will be responsible for the architecture, deployment, performance, resilience and lifecycle management of storage services supporting critical business and trading infrastructure. You will work closely with infrastructure, cloud, networking, security, research and application engineering teams to deliver highly available, secure and performant storage solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement and operate enterprise storage platforms across on-premises and AWS environments.
- Administer and optimise AWS storage services including Amazon EBS, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and Amazon S3.
- Manage and support Pure Storage and VAST Data platforms, including provisioning, capacity planning, performance tuning, upgrades and incident response.
- Design and support block and file storage services using iSCSI, RDMA over Ethernet (RoCE), NFS and CIFS/SMB.
- Provide storage services for VMware, AWS EC2, Kubernetes and bare-metal Linux environments.
- Support virtualised Windows Server workloads and Linux systems across physical and virtual infrastructure.
- Build automation for provisioning, configuration, monitoring, capacity management and operational workflows using Python and Infrastructure as Code.
- Develop storage observability covering capacity, latency, IOPS, throughput, availability, errors and data-protection status.
- Lead performance analysis and optimisation for demanding, data-intensive and latency-sensitive workloads.
- Manage data protection, replication, snapshots, backup integration, disaster recovery and business-continuity testing.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and support planned maintenance, incident management and root-cause analysis.
- Produce clear architecture documentation, operational runbooks and capacity forecasts.
- Partner with engineering teams to define storage standards, security controls and best practices.
Technical Skills Required
- Significant hands-on experience supporting enterprise storage in demanding, high-availability environments.
- Strong experience with AWS EBS, FSx for NetApp ONTAP and Amazon S3, including provisioning, performance management and cost optimisation.
- Deep experience with at least one of Pure Storage or VAST Data, ideally both.
- Strong knowledge of storage protocols including NFS, CIFS/SMB and iSCSI.
- Practical experience with RDMA over Ethernet (RoCE) and high-performance storage networking.
- Strong Linux administration skills across bare-metal and virtual environments.
- Experience supporting VMware, AWS EC2 and Kubernetes storage integrations.
- Experience presenting storage to Kubernetes clusters, including persistent volumes, storage classes and CSI-based provisioning.
- Solid Windows Server administration experience, particularly in virtualised environments.
- Strong Python scripting skills for automation, APIs, reporting and operational tooling.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tooling, capacity planning and performance troubleshooting.
- Understanding of storage security, encryption, access control, data lifecycle management and regulatory expectations relevant to financial services.
Desirable Experience
- Experience with NetApp ONTAP, including SVMs, volumes, snapshots, SnapMirror, FlexClone and multiprotocol NAS.
- Experience with AWS FSx for ONTAP integration with VMware datastores and Kubernetes/EKS persistent storage.netapp+1
- Exposure to trading, financial-services, HPC, AI/ML or other low-latency data-intensive environments.
- Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform, Ansible or similar tooling.
- Experience with CI/CD practices and Git-based operational workflows.
- Familiarity with backup and replication technologies such as Veeam, Zerto or native platform replication.
- Relevant certifications such as NetApp NCDA/NCIE, Pure Storage Certified Professional, AWS Solutions Architect/Storage, VCP or Kubernetes certifications.
What Success Looks Like
- Storage platforms are resilient, performant, secure and well instrumented.
- Storage provisioning is fast, repeatable and automated.
- Capacity, performance and risk are proactively managed rather than reactively addressed.
- Critical incidents are resolved quickly with clear communication and durable root-cause fixes.
- Engineering teams receive reliable, well-documented storage services suited to trading, research and enterprise workloads.
What We Offer
- Highly competitive compensation and discretionary bonus.
- Comprehensive benefits package.
- Hybrid working arrangements.
- Direct exposure to cutting-edge trading, cloud and data infrastructure.
- Strong investment in training, certifications and career development.
- A collaborative, technically excellent engineering culture.
