Position Description
The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is the largest unified trial court in the United States. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Law Clerks conduct legal research, analyze motions and other matters on calendar to expedite court calendars, prepare written recommendations there on, and perform related duties as assigned. A detailed job description is available at the following links: ,
Special Conditions of Employment: Law clerks may be employed for a limited term of up to 30 months, with formal performance appraisals given at the 12 month and 24 month, and 30 month anniversary. Law Clerks may not practice law, receive legal fees, and/or represent a party as counsel during their employment by the Court as Law Clerks. Other outside employment must be approved in advance. Employment is "at will."
SALARY*
Law Clerk (Non-Bar): $91,265.40 - $96,353.40 Annually
Law Clerk (Bar Member): $100,725.84 - $112,272.00 Annually
*Incoming law clerks with less than three years of California-licensed attorney experience will be compensated at the entry-level point within the salary range.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application:
  • LAW CLERK (NON-BAR):
    • Graduation from an accredited school of law with a Juris Doctor degree.
  • LAW CLERK (BAR MEMBER)*:
    • Licensed to practice law in the state of California and an active member in good standing of the State Bar of California.

The requirements for 3Ls are as follows: Current enrollment in a Juris Doctor program at an accredited school of law, in good standing, and within six months of graduation. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to conduct legal research independently, apply the law to the facts and reach a sound, well-supported conclusion about the motion or other matter
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judicial officers and others in the workplace
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively and meet deadlines

PROCESS FOR CONSIDERATION

Step 3 - The hiring committee will interview applicants and identify those who will be extended offers of employment.
Step 4 - Interviews for placement in specific assignments occur thereafter, when a judge has a vacancy, these interviews may take place before or after court employment begins, with the managing research attorneys and judge interviewing candidates and making placement decisions.

Choices Benefit Plan
Benefits may be purchased using a tax-free monthly benefits allowance between $1,149.21 - $2,476.90 for the 2025 plan year (based on number enrolled in medical coverage). If the monthly cost of the benefits selected is less than the monthly allowance, the employee receives the difference as additional taxable pay, up to a maximum of $244.00. Flexible Spending Accounts
Employees may contribute up to $266 per month into a tax-free Health Care Spending Account and up to $400 per month tax-free into a Dependent Care Spending Account. The Court contributes up to $375 per month to the Dependent Care Spending Account.
Leave Benefits
Vacation - All permanent and other designated categories of employees are eligible to earn paid vacation based on years of service. Vacation is based on continuous service and credited at the completion of each consecutive six-month period of employment.
Sick leave - Depending on the length of service and employment categories, up to one day of full pay per month of service is accrued monthly for qualifying service.
Holidays - 14 days per year.

Retirement
Deferred Compensation Plan (457) - Optional tax-deferred supplemental retirement plan that includes a County match of up to 4% of employee's salary.
Retirement Pension Plan administered by the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA).
If the candidate is a "new member" of the County's defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013, that person's pension will be limited under the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). For these purposes, a "new member" is someone who first becomes a member of LACERA on or after January 1, 2013 - that is, someone first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012 - unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. Other Benefits
