Position Type: Tutors/Special Education Tutor Date Posted: 3/12/2026 Location: District Wide Date Available: Immediately Closing Date: 05/28/2026 Stratford Public Schools has the following Vision Tutor Position available for the 2025-2026 school year: Location: Off-site State approved special education program Hours: 8:30AM-2:30PM - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & 8:30am - 12noon - Wednesday SCOPE: The general responsibilities of the special education tutor are to provide instructional support in an effort to meet individual student needs. The tutor will use school and district resources to achieve goals and objectives and to provide feedback to staff regarding the student progress. This job description is intended to outline the general nature and level of work to be performed by individuals assigned to this position. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and qualifications required of the tutor. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Guidelines for the creation of tactual graphics
Basic orientation and mobility skills
Implications of visual loss
Techniques for facilitating social inclusion
Adaptive technology used by the student
Technology necessary for auditory learning modalities such as Jaws
All of the above skills are learned through specialized training
Provide academic instruction to students, either within a small group or individually
Assist with implementing IEP goals/ objectives and Behavioral Intervention Plans
Collaborate with teacher to assist with the preparation of instructional plans to meet the varied needs and abilities of the students, as necessary
Communicate and cooperate to facilitate a close working relationship with teachers and other professionals
Perform work under the direction of the teacher and accept feedback to improve practices
Attend periodic professional development given by the school district to increase work-related competencies
Responsible for maintaining student records, including formative and summative assessment, behavioral data, etc
Motivate students to develop a positive attitude toward learning and foster pro-social skills
Assist students in achieving a better understanding of subject-specific material and improve academic capabilities in designated subject areas
Implement necessary behavioral supports if needed and collect data as directed
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by the classroom teacher, Pupil Services administrator(s) and / or building administrator
Independent Functions:
Participation as a team member in the educational process, that includes consultation with the classroom teacher, the certified teacher of the visually impaired, special teachers, and all appropriate faculty
The acquisition of these skills takes time as well as a person capable of assimilating and using all of this knowledge appropriately
The person in this position has access to the teacher of the visually impaired, but often times must make judgments and decisions independently
The BESB consultant is not in the building daily, therefore, the materials modification specialist must function independently at times
The staff is reliant upon the materials modification specialist's knowledge and skills to fulfill their educational obligation to the student as specified in the IEP
In addition, this person must organize and manage time to interface and communicate with an entire team of individuals in order for the student's program to be successful
QUALIFICATIONS:
State of Connecticut teaching certification preferred
Experience as a classroom teacher is preferred
Strong understanding of educational strategies and interventions for addressing diverse learning needs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
Patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach to working with students with varying needs
Commitment to improving student achievement across all areas
