Financial Counselor | On-Site | Full Time

Gritman Medical Center is seeking a Financial Counselor to serve as the primary contact for patient reimbursement issues, focusing on assisting uninsured and underinsured patients. The ideal candidate will screen and enroll patients in financial assistance programs, educate them on fiscal responsibilities, and develop payment plans. This role requires exceptional customer service, both in person and over the phone, to foster positive patient relationships and ensure prompt reimbursement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Financial Assistance:
    • Screen and enroll patients in assistance programs, including Medicaid and other scholarship programs.
    • Assist with financial assistance applications and process approvals or denials promptly.
    • Collaborate with Case Managers to maximize funding opportunities for patients.
  • Customer Service:
    • Provide explanations of billing statements, insurance benefits, and financial terms.
    • Respond to patient inquiries and complaints, ensuring timely resolutions.
    • Communicate payment options and arrange payment plans per hospital guidelines.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Process daily paperwork, document patient interactions, and maintain confidentiality.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations.
    • Attend and contribute to team meetings and organizational training.
  • Collections Support:
    • Collect outstanding payments and make collection calls on past-due accounts.
    • Provide requested information to legal teams and collection agencies as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience demonstrating strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Broad knowledge of governmental assistance programs and application processes.
  • Familiarity with statutes and regulations impacting patient financial discussions (e.g., 501(r)).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex medical and administrative language into patient-friendly terms.
  • High attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Preferred:

  • Associate degree in healthcare administration or equivalent college coursework.
  • Experience in financial counseling, eligibility screening, or Medicaid application processing.
  • Community outreach experience is a plus.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent computer use (up to 90% of the day).
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
  • Limited standing, stooping, and carrying of light materials.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily indoor work with minimal risk of exposure to biohazardous materials.
