Design Supervisor
Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). NNSS is seeking a Design Supervisor to oversee the performance of a group of SolidWorks and Creo Design professionals in the Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments (ECSE) directorate. This team supports the design development of cutting-edge diagnostics used in stockpile stewardship experiments, including a 125-meter linear induction accelerator that will be used to generate high-energy x-ray bursts to take radiographic images and the ZEUS dense plasma focus diagnostic. Position involves both supervision and design activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly supervises team of Designers, including monitoring performance, approving time, developing goals, monitoring training status, and troubleshooting design related questions/concerns as they arise.
- Uses computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software to create mechanical designs and drawings in research and development environment.
- Devises new approaches for designing and drafting complex chassis builds and mechanical assemblies.
- Performs work of the same type as those being supervised, as well as providing technical guidance.
- Works with Project Management and Technical personnel to plan design and 3D printing activities for team of Designers each fiscal year.
- Monitors and balances workload across employees ensuring schedules are met.
- Determines future resource needs, writes job requisitions, interviews prospective employees, and provides input on selected candidates.
- Trains new engineers, designers, and technical staff on SolidWorks CAD software, Creo design software, and Product Document Management (PDM) Systems.
- Acts as Job Supervisor for activity level work assignments associated with 3D printing activities.
- Acts as Solidworks PDM change administrator.
- Coordinates with Design Supervisors at outlying NNSS locations and with System Engineers at the Nuclear Weapons Laboratories on efforts to migrate design documents and models to an NNSA enterprise level Windchill ePDM platform.
- Coordinates and tracks licenses and upgrades to Solidworks and PDM across NV and outlying locations for stockpile related mission activities.
- Oversees functionality of large format and 3D printers on required maintenance activities and establishment of associated subcontracts.
- Performs drafting checks on drawings to applicable standards.
- Holds personnel accountable to meeting design standards and requirements in company documents.
- Organizes and supervises day-to-day operations, ensuring critical mission milestones and schedules are met.
- Responsible for working within assigned budget.
- Interacts daily with subordinates and frequent interaction with managers for status updates on assignments.
- Coordinates regularly with vendors, customers, and Nuclear Laboratory personnel to complete mission-related design activities.
- Creates an environment where employees feel safe to raise issues, empowered to address issues, and supported to resolve issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelors' degree or equivalent training and experience, plus a minimum of 8 years of related and progressively responsible experience.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or Creo design software.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Working knowledge of Product Document Management Systems such as SolidWorks PDM or Windchill.
- Experience in change management and configuration management principles.
- Experience training or mentoring personnel on design drafting
- Proficiency in performing Quality Assurance checks on design drawings.
- Able to work independently and/or collaboratively with engineers and other technical personnel.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders.
- Skilled in identifying, analyzing and solving problems.
- Ability to multi-task numerous projects and conflicting priorities.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and work as part of a team.
- Experience using standard office software products.
- Frequent travel to the NNSS forward areas is required (approximately 30 miles beyond the Mercury gate, 65 miles North of Las Vegas)
- This position is based in Nevada but may require some travel to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) to coordinate the migration of designs and models to the NNSS.
- Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SolidWorks or Windchill ePDM administration.
- Prior experience in designing chassis and/or complex mechanical assemblies preferred.
- Working knowledge of Visio.
- Demonstrated experience leading teams on small projects.
- Comfortable with holding personnel accountable to meet strict deadlines.
- Skilled in performing audits or assessments of designs to meet company requirements.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision in a dynamic multidisciplinary project environment with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.
- Experience working in a team environment that includes scientists, engineers, technicians, designers, and Craft/maintenance personnel.
- Experience with resin and/or metal 3D printing.
- Familiarity with Department of Energy (DOE) regulations and requirements related to engineering and design.
- Ability to execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and NNSS policies and procedures.
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. Annual salary range for this position is: $103,480.00 - $165,568.00.
