General DescriptionThis is work of a specialized nature involving specific responsibility, under general supervision, for one or more aspects of library work. At the Central Library, this position includes direct supervision of non-public service departments, outreach work, and status as Assistant Division Head in public service divisions. In the Community Branch Libraries, the work involves general supervision in a branch library as designated supervisor of a branch which is administered by a Librarian IV (Quadrant Librarian). This position has the responsibility for carrying out or supervising policies, procedures, tasks, and assignments as directed by the supervising librarian. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate professional, paraprofessional, clerical, and volunteer personnel. Performs related work as required.
Typical Work Activities- Implements and directs literacy-based activities such as reading programs, tutoring and other activities for the assigned community;
- Implements and directs new programs and services;
- Monitors the branch building and grounds, and reports problems to the quadrant manager (Librarian IV);
- Assigns duties, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff;
- Plans and participates in community outreach projects;
- Performs original cataloging and classification of library materials and may design appropriate systems of information organization and retrieval methods (at Central only);
- Performs varied and/or specialized professional library work in collection development, including acquisition, evaluation and selection, and withdrawal of library materials;
- Supervises the use of the branch or division computer network;
- Collects and provides data and narrative reports on branch or division usage to the supervising librarian;
- Compiles bibliographies and may act as a subject specialist;
- Performs online database searching and provides such training to patrons;
- Provides reference and reader's advisory services to patrons;
- Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses, and reading professional materials.
Minimum Qualifications- Masters degree in Library Science from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the New York State Education Department as following accepted education practices; AND
- Two (2) years of professional library experience subsequent to receiving the MLS.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for a New York State Public Librarian's professional certificate at time of application.
Possession of certificate at time of appointment.
