Bus Monitor
Ride buses and assist the driver in ensuring safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Special Knowledge/Skills:

Experience:
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Student Management:
- Assist students on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
- Supervise students as they board and exit the bus and cross the street following established safety procedures.
- Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations.
- Learn and adapt to each student's medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Manage student behavior and report discipline concerns in a timely manner to the appropriate administrator.
- Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student behavior on the bus when necessary.
Routes and Schedules:
- Become familiar with all routes and schedules to assist the driver.
- Complete and maintain accurate, updated, and timely records and reports.
Safety:
- Ensure seat belts, harnesses, and car seats are used correctly and assist students with safety devices as needed.
- Follow emergency procedures, including evacuation, and assist with first aid when necessary.
- Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Follow proper procedures when lifting and assisting students.
Other:
- Follow procedures established by transportation and special education departments.
- Review transportation forms to ensure student IEP requirements are followed.
- Assist the driver in keeping the bus clean.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required annual training.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA.

Tools/Equipment Used: Wheelchair lift, ramp, locking systems, and adaptive equipment. Posture: Frequent standing and sitting; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Motion: Frequent walking and reaching. Lifting: Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), assisting with student positioning, physical support, and moving adaptive equipment. Environment: Work inside and outside; exposure to weather conditions, noise, vehicle fumes, and biological hazards; work around moving vehicles and machinery. Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
